Received: Two Guinness specialties
Two new specialty beers from Guinness arrived this week: Rye Pale Ale, and Antwerpen Stout. Will be interesting to try these, though I’m more looking forward to the stout.

My latest print article to appear in the Bulletin’s GO! Magazine supplement this past Thursday (still out now) is on IPA: What makes an IPA great? In addition to covering a bit of the style and history of India Pale Ale (very abridged due to space constraints, of course!), I asked … Continue reading
The Brewpublic Killer Pumpkin Festival that was originally scheduled for today at The Green Dragon has been postponed due to the crazy storm weather. (Did you see the tornado in Manzanita yesterday?) Instead it has been moved to Saturday, October 29. Meanwhile the Elysian Brewing Pumpkin Roadshow has been making the rounds, … Continue reading
Brewpublic‘s annual Killer Beer Week returns this week, with a week-long lineup of great beer events taking place around Portland from October 14 through 23. This is the eighth anniversary of KBW and all the old favorites are back. Here’s the press release and scheduled events: If you’ve ever attended … Continue reading
In addition to Halloween, it’s now officially winter beer season as well, as these arrived yesterday: Deschutes Brewery’s Jubelale is one of my favorite winter beers, and I’m pleased that this year it’s arriving in October rather than August!

One of my favorite local beer festivals is taking place this Saturday, October 1: the Sisters Fresh Hop Festival! This year is the seventh annual event, taking place at Village Green Park from noon to 8pm, and the price is still right: $5 for the glass, and $1 for a … Continue reading
Two different press/media arrivals last week: The Book of Dangerous Cocktails, and the imperial winter/holiday cider Nice & Naughty from 2 Towns Ciderhouse. Not sure if there’s a theme. I will note neither of these things have much to do with beer directly; a quick check of the index of … Continue reading
The Pine Tavern‘s annual Beerfest Challenge returns again this year, the PT81 (last year was PT80, celebrating the 2016 80th anniversary of the restaurant), taking place on Tuesday, September 27th. Like last year, I am returning as head judge to help pick the winning beer that the Pine Tavern will … Continue reading
