Advent Beer Calendar 2010: Day 3: Ebenezer Spiced Ale
Ebenezer Scrooge is the miserly, greedy, misanthropic main character of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, who after being visited by three Ghosts of Christmas repents his ways and embraces the Christmas spirit with generosity and kindness. As iconic a Christmas-related character as you’ll find in literature, there are a handful of breweries that have adopted his name for their seasonal holiday brews.
Such is the case of Ebenezer Spiced Ale, today’s beer pick from Bluegrass Brewing Company out of Louisville, Kentucky. In fact, tonight is also the Christmas party and Ebenezer Spiced Ale Unveiling at all three of the Bluegrass brewpub locations, which is a nice bit of timing!
Ebenezer Spiced Ale is a malty amber ale with 6.5% alcohol by volume, and is spiced with ginger, sweet orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. The aromas alone on a spice bill like that should put you into the Christmas Spirit—forget being visited by three ghosts!
