Advent Beer Calendar 2012: Day 5: Saranac Season’s Best
Here in the United States today is Repeal Day, celebrating the ratification of the 21st Amendment that repealed Prohibition. Happy Repeal Day!
I wanted to select a beer to help commemorate the day, and thought a beer from a brewery that survived Prohibition would be perfect—and Matt Brewing Company from New York fits that bill. The second-oldest family brewery in the U.S., having brewed in one form or another since at least 1885, Matt today brews under the Saranac label, so today’s pick is their holiday beer, Season’s Best.
The label subtitles it a “Nut Brown Lager”: it’s a malty Vienna Lager brewed to 5.3% abv, of which the brewery says:
Brewed with a special blend of domestic and Belgian malts for a delicate nut-like character, you’ll love this Lager’s rich taste and signature hop aroma. The exceptional full-bodied taste reflects our Brewery’s extraordinary commitment to brewing beers of the highest standard of quality.
Enjoy Repeal Day with some of the season’s best!
