Advent Beer Calendar 2017: Day 19: Indiana City Cratchit’s Ale
Happy Scrooge Day, or Christmas Carol Day, or Christmas Ghosts Day—however you’d like to call it, on this day (December 19) in 1843, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was published. The last few years for the Advent calendar I’ve been selecting appropriately-themed beers, and this year is no exception: today’s pick is Indiana City Brewing’s Cratchit’s Ale, a “Winter Olde Ale” that is 8.9% alcohol by volume.
Cratchit’s is a warming beer brewed with English Marris Otter along with rich specialty malts to add sweet complexity and molasses aroma. The finished beer is then spiced with freshly cracked allspice and whole cinnamon sticks for a hint of holiday cheer. Raise a toast to those you love and welcome the warmth of gratitude into your heart this holiday season.
It’s named for Bob Cratchit, of course—Ebenezer Scrooge’s long-suffering, underpaid clerk. Scrooge, of course, has a change of heart by the end of the story and provides Cratchit and his family with a sumptuous dinner and financial means, and if that’s not worth toasting with a bottle of Cratchit’s Ale, then perhaps you’ll be visiting by Christmas spirits of your own…
