Advent Beer Calendar 2018: Day 17: Deschutes Jubelale
For today’s Advent beer pick I’ve selected an American classic from my hometown of Bend, Oregon: Deschutes Brewery Jubelale. This winter warmer was first released in 1988, the year the brewery opened, and has returned every year since.
The first years, Jubelale was bottled in 750 milliliter champagne bottles before switching to 12-ounce bottles in the early 1990s. Beginning in 1995, Deschutes commissioned a local artist to create a new label each year.
The beer itself is rich and malty, with a spicy note that comes from the interplay of malts and hops (no actual spices added). At 6.7% alcohol by volume with 65 IBUs, it hits that sweet spot for winter warmers and remains a holiday standard.
