Advent Beer Calendar 2018: Day 7: Great Divide Hibernation Ale
For today’s Advent beer pick, I’ve selected a seasonal favorite that seem appropriate to the cold snap we’ve been having, an English-style old ale from Denver, Colorado: Great Divide Hibernation Ale.
Great Divide has been brewing terrific beer since 1994, and Hibernation has been a winter staple since ’95. And while the brewery might be best known for its Yeti Imperial Stout, I’ve always felt that Hibernation is an exemplar of the old ale style and is my favorite of the lineup.
The style is also perfect for this time of year; of old ale, Michael Jackson said, “It should be a warming beer of the type that is best drunk in half pints by a warm fire on a cold winter’s night.” Hibernation Ale hits that mark, and is a hefty, warming beer at 8.7% alcohol by volume. Great Divide says of it, “This robust, dry-hopped ale has a malty richness balanced with a complex hop profile and hearty, warming character.”
Grab some of this beer and settle in to hibernate until Christmas and beyond!
