Advent Beer Calendar 2019: Day 6: Samichlaus Classic
Today, December 6, is Saint Nicholas Day, commemorating the Christian feast day and overnight arrival of St. Nicholas—also known as Santa Claus—who leaves toys and treats for children. This is more prevalent in Old World Europe than in North America, though there are regions with strong Germanic influence that celebrate the day. And today’s Advent pick celebrates St. Nicholas Day as well—quite literally—in the form of Samichlaus Classic from Austria’s Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg.
“Samichlaus” is the Swiss-German for Santa Claus and was originally brewed in Switzerland. At a massive 14% alcohol by volume, Samichlaus was long held to be the strongest lager in the world. Per tradition, Samichlaus is brewed just once a year—on December 6, naturally. It is then fermented and conditioned for another year, released the following holiday season.
Schloss Eggenberg describes the beer as “Shimmering reddish brown, complex flavors of prunes, malt and caramel.” I can attest that this is a boozy, complex, luscious treat and a perfect Christmas beer. It’s also a great candidate to cellar and holds up quite well when stored properly.
Incidentally, the “Classic” refers to the original, triple bock version. There is also a Helles edition (brewed entirely with pilsner malt) and a Schwarzes (black) edition.
Sip on a glass of Samichlaus for St. Nicholas Day, and don’t forget to save a bottle for Christmas Eve to leave a tipple out for Santa.
