Advent Beer Calendar 2021: Day 16: BlackBird Cider Works Christmas Cider
Cider! In recent years I’ve been featuring cider on the Beer Advent Calendar since cider is a natural fit into the beer world, even as it straddles the line between beer and wine. This year I set out to include it again and discovered BlackBird Cider Works of New York, which produces a seasonal favorite in its Christmas Cider.
Christmas Cider is 6.5% ABV and spiced for the holidays; the cidery’s description says:
A seasonal Western New York favorite. Delicately spiced with hints of apple, ginger and a cinnamon finish. Serve warmed or chilled.
Based on the company’s social media, the production of Christmas Cider is quite the affair; on bottling day (in October), there may or may not be folks dressed in Christmas attire, and Christmas music plays all day (“Feliz Navidad” on repeat this year). What better way to get into the spirit of the holidays for this seasonal release?
BlackBird Cider Works produced its first cider in 2011 and opened its western New York tasting room in 2012, and a second location in Buffalo in 2018. BlackBird produces its award-winning ciders from apples grown in its own estate orchards, and covers a variety of cider styles, from standard dry and semi-sweet ciders to fruit ciders to oak and spirit barrel aged ciders.
