Advent Beer Calendar 2021: Day 22: Bridge Road Brewers Magical Christmas Pavlova Unicorn
For today’s Advent beer we travel to the land down under, to Victoria, Australia to visit Bridge Road Brewers and its seasonal treat—Magical Christmas Pavlova Unicorn. It’s a fruited cream ale that I have to admit that I picked because I liked the name, although since it’s summer in Australia this time of year, a cream ale makes perfect sense for a summertime Christmas brew—and a pavlova-themed beer makes even more sense (you’ll see why).
The previous iteration of this holiday ale was inspired by vanilla ice cream (also a perfect summer treat), this year’s Pavlova edition includes passionfruit and is 7.3% ABV. The brewery says:
Just when you thought Christmas couldn’t get any better!
The unicorn, formerly known as ice cream, returns with another magical creation, the pavlova beer.
It’s a lush cream ale with a hint of passionfruit for MAXIMUM PAV™.
But what’s a pavlova? It’s a meringue-based cake dessert topped with fruit and whipped cream, and is part of Australian cuisine, frequently served during the holidays and in the summer, particularly during Christmas. A Christmas dessert! Bridge Road has added the fruit to enhance the vanilla and creaminess of the brew to bring that pavlova impression to its Christmas beer, and why not? It’s a nice change of pace from the other Christmas desserts we love here in the northern hemisphere.
