Advent Beer Calendar 2021: Day 24: Block 15 Brewing Ol’ Saint Nick Winter Ale
It’s Christmas Eve, and the final day of the Beer Advent Calendar! For this final Advent beer I’ve selected one as a nod to the jolly old elf who delivers gifts this evening: Ol’ Saint Nick Winter Ale from Oregon’s Block 15 Brewing.
Ol’ Saint Nick is a true winter warmer, brewed to 9% alcohol by volume with a malt-forward emphasis and a rich complexity of flavor. Block 15’s description says:
Named after our Patron Saint of Brewers, Ol’ Saint Nick is a generously malt-forward winter ale—artfully constructed with a base of Maris Otter, honey malt, and caramel malt balanced by zesty hop character. Ol’ Saint Nick offers notes of toffee, cocoa, plum, and caramel with citrusy hops and a pleasant lingering finish.
Block 15 is located in the college town of Corvallis, and brews a range of beers from classic and traditional styles to hop-forward IPAs and experimentals to barrel-aged and spontaneously fermented beers—and brew them all quite well, in my opinion. The brewery offers up a number of holiday beers during the season alongside Ol’ Saint Nick, including Figgy Pudding (an English-style barleywine), Hoppy Holidays Imperial IPA, and Hoppy New Year! Imperial IPA.
Thanks for making it all the way to the end of this year’s Beer Advent Calendar—now, I’ve got a can of Ol’ Saint Nick waiting for me…
Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
