Advent Beer Calendar 2021: Day 9: Blue Owl Brewing Jubilberry
Austin, Texas has a remarkable beer scene, yet somehow I’ve never featured an Austin brewery on the Beer Advent Calendar in the years I’ve been doing this. (Only three Texas breweries have made it on here over the years.) So this year I set out to rectify that and selected a holiday beer from Blue Owl Brewing: Jubilberry, a sour cranberry ale brewed with ginger and oats.
Harvested from September through December, cranberries are a natural addition to Christmas foods and festivities, and Blue Owl highlights them well in this sour red ale. It’s 7.1% ABV and 20 IBUs, and the brewery says:
Whether celebrating with the festive tart cranberries or snuggling up with the cozy oats & spices, Jubilberry is the perfect Texas winter companion.
FLAVOR PROFILE: Festive cranberries & soft flaked oats give way to a cozy spice bouquet for this jubilant winter ale.
Established in 2015, Blue Owl focuses on sour ales with the goal of creating well-balanced sour beers across a variety of base styles. You’ll find sour versions of pale, wheat, red, IPA, lager styles and more, produced by sour mash techniques promoting lactic acid—if not kettle souring methods, then it sounds a bit like German sour mash procedures.
Although winters in Austin are pretty mild, you’ll still want to snap up cans of Jubilberry to stave off the cool evenings as well as to add some flair to your holidays.
