Advent Beer Calendar 2022: Day 11: Keller Holz Stollen Doppelbock

When it comes to Christmas treats, stollen is a German traditional cake-like fruit bread containing dried or candied fruits, nuts, and spices, and is coated in powdered sugar; something akin to the ever-popular (or ever-infamous) fruitcake. Because it’s a holiday dessert treat I thought it would be fun to feature an Advent beer inspired by it, so today’s beer pick is Stollen Doppelbock from Keller Holz Privatbrauerei, a craft brewery located in the Eastern European country of Moldova.

Stollen Doppelbock is 8.5% alcohol by volume with 27 IBUs. Keller Holz brewed it in the style of a doppelbock befitting its German confection inspiration.

Doppelbock is a strong, usually dark German beer, the history of which is traced back to one historical beer, which, albeit heavily modified, is still brewed today.

Doppelbock is perfect for a frosty winter evening. And what can symbolize the onset of winter in Germany? Naturally, this is Stollen, a traditional Christmas cake-like fruit bread of spices, raisins and candied fruit, generously sprinkled with powdered sugar. That is why Holz brewers brewed STOLLEN DOPPELBOCK – a winter version of Doppelbock with the addition of Stroh, Austrian spiced rum, dried fruits and candied fruits. After you taste Holz’s Stollen Doppelbock, be sure to store up a few bottles, since it will improve over the years as other strong beers do!

It’s a treat of a beer that would pair well with a slice of stollen—or, at the very least, fruitcake and other Christmas goodies.

I’m really enjoying the Advent. What do you think about doing a real one next year with local brewers? Maybe see you Wednesday night at the dinner party
