Deschutes Brewery Farmstand Fresh Mango IPA
You might expect a beer with “Fresh” in the name reviewed during fresh hop season to be a fresh hop beer, but not so with Farmstand Fresh Mango IPA from Deschutes Brewery. It’s the latest in the company’s “Fresh Family” of beers which started with its flagship Fresh Squeezed IPA.
It’s the first in the series brewed with fruit—in this case, mango juice, which joins the Bravo and Mosaic hops to target a big tropical/mango drinking experience. The website says:
We sought to create an IPA that brought huge mango flavor from aroma to finish. The experience is like traveling to a tropical locale and grabbing a mango from a farm stand and placing it in your IPA and hanging in your hammock.
It’s 6.4% ABV with 40 IBUs. Deschutes recently sent me cans of Farmstand Fresh to review.
Appearance: Golden orange color, translucently hazy, with a good white head.
Smell: Fresh mango, with a touch of zesty spice that I associate with actual fresh-cut fruit. Herbal green hops complement the fruit really well, bolstering the zesty juicy notes.
Taste: Spicy with mango skin and peppercorn, moderate level of bitterness which is more of an herbal tea character than lupulin. Fruit is pleasant but balanced, playing off the bitterness while also adding a hint of sweet. It pops in flavor but isn’t showy, with a good moreish quality.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with some light spice and a dry finish.
Overall: Pretty tasty, a good balance of fruit in an IPA that’s not cloying or thick.
