Double Mountain Brewery + Gigantic Brewing = Wondertwins IPA
Over the summer, Double Mountain Brewery and Gigantic Brewing teamed up to release a collaboration beer—Wondertwins IPA. I received a bottle, and ended up behind in posting reviews. The good news is, Wondertwins is still on the shelves so you can still pick it up to try it out yourself.
It’s a hazy IPA brewed with kveik yeast, and here’s a bit from the press release about the beer:
Collaborating with friends at Gigantic, using the house Kviek strain, Comet and Citra hops, creates a beer that dazzles with grapefruit, tangerine, and citrus zest, prevailing over the forces of evil. This IPA is made by superheroes for the superhero in everyone. Brewed hot…served cold, Wondertwins, Activate!
Wondertwins is 6.5% ABV with 65 IBUs.
Appearance: Hazy golden color, a good uniform cloudiness that’s nearly opaque. Thick white head, great lacing.
Smell: Bright and fruity, with “alt” citrus notes—kumquat, yuzu? (Not the usual grapefruit/orange/lemon.) Slightly catty, green melon, herbal lemongrass. A touch of hot fermentation esters for an almost-rustic note.
Taste: Spicy herbal bitterness, it goes in a savory flavor direction for me rather than fruity. I get bitter citrus peel and lots of wild greens, hay, and peppery floral notes. There’s a lot going on with savory-spicy character without fitting into any one category. Some juice.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied lightly finishing with a peppery heat. (Hop burn.)
Overall: It’s interesting and suitably hazy without any gimmicks.
