Drinking Culmination 4 & 20 on 4/20
It’s 4/20, so why not a round of theme drinking as a tip of the hat to the unofficial holiday? We recently found 4 & 20 Imperial Black IPA from Culmination Brewing, and though the label’s proliferation of blackbirds is meant to evoke “Sing a Song of Sixpence,” we all know what the name really refers to. (At least when drinking it on April 20.)
Not a lot of details on the beer available online, but I believe it’s a seasonal that hearkens back to Culmination’s earliest days and counted among its first-ever bottle releases back in 2015. This particular can (16 ounces) was 9.6% ABV, with no IBUs listed (though Untapped lists 64), and for hops it lists Chinook and Amarillo.
Appearance: Dark brown, almost black, and opaque. Incredibly creamy, thick tan head with terrific lacing.
Smell: Suitably dank and piney, with a touch of sweaty greens and a deep roasty malt with touches of chocolate and caramel. Some steely nuttiness and lightly “wet” notes of cannabis.
Taste: Big bitterness that plays into the piney hops, and dark malts that are a big chocolatey—no harsh roasted or tar-like flavors as can sometimes happen with this hop/malt combo. The hops are definitely prominent and sticky and they balance well with the slightly sweet malt body. It’s a nicely dialed black IPA, it almost goes to bitter dark chocolate with all the flavor interplay.
Mouthfeel: Fairly full body and nicely thick with a dry finish and a lingering hop bitterness with a bit of a danky aftertaste.
Overall: It’s quite nice for the style and a good beer for 4/20.
