Exploring 2 Towns’ Cosmic variant series (Tropical and Blueberry)
2 Towns Ciderhouse expanded its Cosmic Crisp® line of ciders this year, adding two new fruited varieties to join the original Cosmic Crisp imperial cider made from Cosmic Crisp apples. The cidery dubbed the new series its Cosmic Explorer Series, all of which are 8% alcohol by volume. The new varieties are Tropical and Blueberry.
I posted the details on the new ciders here, and 2 Towns sent me cans of each to review. Some of the details from the press release:
Launching off its astronomical success with award-winning Comic Crisp®, 2 Towns Ciderhouse expands its interstellar imperial series with two bold, new flavor frontiers, Tropical Cosmic Crisp® and Blueberry Cosmic Crisp® (both at 8% ABV).
Hitting earthling stores in early February, Tropical Cosmic Crisp® and Blueberry Cosmic Crisp® join the original Cosmic Crisp® (launched in 2021) to round out the Cosmic Explorer Series–the new, high ABV, imperial cider line from 2 Towns.
All three high gravity ciders (Tropical Cosmic Crisp®, Blueberry Cosmic Crisp®, and the original Cosmic Crisp®) are crafted with Cosmic Crisp® apples and designed to transport you straight across the galaxy. Tropical Cosmic Crisp® embodies purple passion fruit, hibiscus flowers, and Comic Crisp® apples and will have you getting pitted on some epic solar flares! On a nearby planet, Blueberry Cosmic Crisp® hits the flavor notes of Northwest blueberries jammin’ with Cosmic Crisp® apples, creating the ultimate space-age cider.
All of the Cosmic Crisp ciders are available in 12-ounce cans as well as draft.
My reviews:
Tropical Cosmic Crisp
Passion fruit is the defining “tropical” character for this cider, along with a hibiscus flowers. The website description says:
Shred the galactic gnar with this interstellar island variation of COSMIC CRISP®. Crafted with purple passion fruit, hibiscus flowers, and COSMIC CRISP® apples, don’t forget your shades and SPF 10100, we’re getting pitted on some epic solar flares!
Appearance: Clear and pink tinged with gold in color; there’s a hiss of carbonation upon opening the can but it looks still in the glass.
Smell: Bright apple aromas with tart notes that do have a tropical impression, though it’s not totally overt or obvious that it’s passion fruit.
Taste: Sweet and tart! Tart enough to be a bit puckering and it’s got a bright, fresh fruit note that blends will with the apple. Crisp! Sweet with an almost candy-like fruit presence, but not cloying. No sense of its alcoholic strength.
Mouthfeel: Crisp, sweet, and semi-petillant with a light lingering tartness.
Overall: It’s quite nice; I can’t specifically call out passion fruit as a particular descriptor, but it’s bright and fruity and enjoyable.
Blueberry Cosmic Crisp
2 Towns continues the “cosmic” imagery and text with Blueberry; the website says:
Join the celestial jam session in this amped-up rendition of COSMIC CRISP®. Crafted with Northwest blueberries and COSMIC CRISP® apples, these rockin’ electric blues will transport you straight across the galaxy.
Appearance: Bright, clear, with a rose-purple color. Moderate carbonation on this pour.
Smell: Mellower than the Tropical; I get the apple aroma with earthy berry presenting a sweet bit of jam; it’s rounded out with subtly sweet fruit notes.
Taste: Sweet with a rich blueberry flavor that hearkens to the berry jam in the aroma; I could imagine this spread on toast, it’s quite nice. There’s a hint of balancing acid to prevent a cloyingly sweet presence and it’s really well balanced. There’s apple present but it’s complementing and highlighting the blueberry.
Mouthfeel: Crisp, semi-petillant, sweet with a clean finish.
Overall: Really good and well-crafted.
