Ferment Brewing + Zupan’s Markets No. 22 Stout
To finish out 2022, Zupan’s Markets teamed up with Ferment Brewing to release the 22nd collaboration beer in the chain’s Farm to Market beer series, named No. 22 Stout. (I don’t know if all the “22”s were intentional?) It’s a big barrel-aged stout, with 14.3% alcohol by volume, aged in Colorado whiskey barrels; the press release describing the brew is here.
The No. 22 Stout spent seven months in Colorado craft whiskey barrels, which has resulted in notes of American oak, vanilla, warm toffee and a satisfyingly sweet finish. Rich and full — yet balanced with light carbonation — it’s sure to become your new favorite fireside sipper. Its chocolatey notes make for a natural pairing with dark chocolate, or it can be enjoyed with roasted or grilled meats, roasted root vegetables, lentils and freshly shucked oysters.
The marketing folks sent me bottles to review, and I’d mentioned that I had high hopes for a good, distinctive beer. Those hopes were met and exceeded; for such a high octane brew it’s quite luscious and drinkable.
Appearance: Dark and opaque, the color of dirty motor oil and with a similar viscosity; good darkish brown head that’s rich and inviting. Terrific legs.
Smell: Whiskey barrel aroma is prominent, almost bright, warm and fruity with a touch of vanilla. Dark chocolate, mocha liqueur, molasses, floral alcohol notes. Rich and boozy, not cloying or syrupy.
Taste: Sweet and warming notes of alcohol and whiskey with deep chocolatey notes of gentle roast; brown sugar, caramel, licorice, molasses, sweet booze, oak, baking chocolate, big estery-fruity notes. Plums, figs, Hawaiian sweet rolls, with dark-toasted oats.
Mouthfeel: Luscious and full-bodied, chewy-sweet without cloying, fruity alcohol warmth.
Overall: It’s a world class example of the style, ridiculously good.
No. 22 Stout is definitely one you’re going to want to pick up if you can find it. It’s strong enough to cellar but it will drink really, really well right now.
