Fresh hop season 2021 – quick notes #12
Finally made it! My final fresh hop “quick notes” review of the year! All in all I counted 36 different fresh hop beers I tried this year. That’s not to say I might not have more—there are still some on the shelves—but I’m done writing these up at this point; on to pumpkin and winter beer reviews! Here are the final three:
Loowit Brewing – Lando Hoprissian Fresh Hop IPA
Loowit’s Lando was brewed with fresh Centennial hops from Crosby Farms, and appears it won a gold medal at this year’s Washington Beer Awards in the Fresh Hop IPA category—considering the quality of Washington’s fresh hop beers, this is no mean feat.
I don’t have much more info on it other that it’s 6.4% ABV with 56 IBUs. No package date The brewery informs me that it was packaged on September 20, I drank it on October 17. My notes:
Deep gold, unfiltered, white head. Mellow bready malt and lightly spicy greens in the aroma. Past it’s aroma prime? Nice but quite mild, with some pine, forest floor flavors. Nice pop of earthy-bitter flavor with a bit of spicy chlorophyll freshness, almost minty.
Fremont Brewing – Head Full of Fresh Hops Hazy IPA
Fremont always puts out excellent fresh hop beers, and this was was no different. Head Full of Fresh Hops is the fresh version of its Head Full of Dynomite hazy IPA series, brewed with fresh Citra and fresh Mosaic hops.
6.8% ABV, no IBUs listed. It was packaged on September 27, I drank it October 18. Notes:
Hazy, creamy look, good head. Nicely fruity aroma with fresh-picked hops and berries—as if you were picking intermingled hop/berry vines. Big(ish) flavor of mildly spicy fresh greens, leafy greens maybe like arugula. Touch of stone fruit, refreshing with a “cooling” presence, hint of citrus peel. Standard hazy-level spicing with a touch of lupulin pollen, and a touch of allium.
Fort George Brewery – Fields of Green Wet Hop IPA
Similar to Fremont’s “Head Full” series, Fields of Green is Fort George’s series for exploring hops. This year’s fresh hop version (or “wet hop” version per the brewery) was brewed with Strata hops from Crosby farms.
It has 7.6% ABV, no IBUs listed. Packaged on September 28, I drank it October 19. My notes:
Lightly hazy golden yellow. Notes of papaya, dried basil, faint cattiness, light cut-grass chlorophyll note. Flavor is a big pop of fresh hay, moss, light green citrus, fresh hops with a light cooling note of wintergreen. Pleasantly bitter in a savory-minty(?) way, with a nice lingering finish. Tasty!
