Fresh hop season 2022 – reviews #10
Fresh hop reviews for the 2022 season continue, with three more to check out.
Double Mountain Brewery – Killer Green Fresh Hop IPA
Double Mountain sent me a bottle of Killer Green to review, a big beer with 7.3% ABV and 95 IBUs. It’s another in the line of Strata fresh hop beers that I’ve found prevalent this year, and those Stratas are used to good effect in this year’s edition of Killer Green.
Description from the press release:
It’s that time again. We bring you Killer Green, loaded with Strata picked fresh from Crosby Hop farms. These juicy little pearls were jam packed with sticky lupulin this year, delivering ripe citrus, dewy evergreen, and some lovely tropical cannabis aromas. Be Green. Drink Killer Green.
Appearance: Golden honey color, unfiltered. Dense and lacy white head.
Smell: Mellow, with some sweatiness, corn husk, melon rind, and maybe some lemon balm.
Taste: Good fresh “green” character (living up to its name) with chlorophyll and fresh cut grass, dandelion greens, a touch of fresh mango. Some good spiciness here, with bitter melon, cucumber skin.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, good dry finish, with lingering hops into the aftertaste.
Overall: It’s not over the top but very well brewed and balanced.
Loowit Brewing – Fresh Hop Lando Hoprissian Fresh Hop IPA
Another year of Fresh Hop Lando from Vancouver, Washington’s Loowit; I don’t have any particular description but I can tell you it was brewed with fresh Centennial hops. It’s also 6.4% ABV with 56 IBUs. My notes:
Appearance: Golden color and a definite haze. Pillowy white head.
Smell: Grassy and herbal, with some orange rind and some fresh-picked berries. Good fragrance, not as muted as some so far, and it has a comforting note.
Taste: Spicy-earthy with big bitterness that has some woody notes, hop stems, slightly astringent and herbal-medicinal character. Garden greens, thinking some kale, carrot tops, something cruciform (broccoli leaves?). Not bad but the woody bitterness is distracting.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a lingering medicinal-bitter flavor.
Overall: A bit above average with a good aroma.
Culmination Brewing – Fresh Hop Phaedrus IPA
Another beer I can tell you very little about, other than Portland’s Culmination brewed this version of its flagship IPA with fresh Centennial hops. It’s 6.5% ABV though no mention of IBUs.
Appearance: Golden yellow, some unfiltered haziness, thick white head.
Smell: Herbal, floral, mellow but a warm field of grass or wheat. Or, a meadow with a lot of wildflowers.
Taste: Herbal and savory with a hint of spice and forest floor earthiness, a gentle bitterness that balances the malt body nicely. The spicy character is soft and floral, a bit of borage, mullein, chamomile, very pleasant. Not too “big” with the fresh quality, but it’s there.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, herbal and clean finish.
Overall: It’s good, mellow and nicely drinkable.
