Fresh hop season 2022 – reviews #11
I am doggedly determined to get all of these fresh hop beer reviews posted, and that means more are coming! With this batch, we’ve got three IPAs from Oregon and Washington showcasing two classic hops and a brand new one.
Single Hill Brewing – Moxee Milieu Fresh Hop IPA
Single Hill is located in Yakima, Washington, the heart of hop country, and for its fresh hop beers I believe all of the hops are either fresh-as-in-unkilned, or freshly-harvested-and-kilned. For Moxee Milieu, the fresh hops are Centennial and Cascade. The description on Untappd says:
A multi-farm family collaboration, this IPA features fresh, wet CLS Farms Centennial, Van Horn Farms Cascade & Marc Desmarais Farms Cascade with Van Horn Cascade, and CLS Centennial, Zappa & Columbus Fresh AF pellets.
It’s 5.4% alcohol by volume with 40 IBUs.
Appearance: Yellow-golden color with a haze to it. White lacy head.
Smell: Greenly-spicy with melon rind/skin and black pepper. Fairly peppery, actually, which is an interesting variation on the beers I’ve had this year so far. There’s some chlorophyll and cut weeds.
Taste: Peppery greens with a nice fresh character that’s got a hint of eucalyptus, a hint of watercress. Some fruity character with green papaya, stone fruit, and pineapple skin. Earthy.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, a touch light, good moreish finish.
Overall: Tasty with a good spicy-peppery-fruity presence.
Via Beer – Proper Dose Fresh Hop IPA
This IPA from one of Oregon’s newest breweries also features fresh Centennial hops. Via is located in Clackamas and released two fresh hop beers this year, I believe. For Proper Dose, the Untapped description says:
100% Crosby Farms Centennials (fresh-from-the-bine ‘22 and some 2021 T90s) with a bit of a throwback feel — a touch of Munich malt gives it a very light amber tinge, and the hopping is balanced, especially for a Via IPA. Classic citrus, grapefruit & pine; the fresh hop green character is apparent but not overblown.
It’s 6.3% ABV.
Appearance: Brassy gold with decent clarity. Ample fine white head.
Smell: Forest floor with a touch of compost and a slight hint of rubber tire? Dandelion, dried grass. Mellow.
Taste: An earthy-spicy character with a pleasantly fresh “green” note that’s slightly menthol, slightly peppery. It’s nice but not flashy, with a solid bitterness that’s got a touch of hop spice (lupulin and white pepper) and a grassy note.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, a touch watery, earthy-spicy finish.
Overall: Decent fresh hop for a freshman brewery.
Crux Fermentation Project – New Favorite Fresh Hop Hazy IPA
Crux played with some of the newer hops again this year, and for New Favorite, Hop #1019 is an experimental hop with Neomexicanus lineage (think Sabro or Zappa). The description says:
New Favorite is a series of fresh hop beers brewed with… you guessed it, our new favorite experimental hop. For this year’s limited Hazy IPA release, we’re featuring Hop #1019 in all its unfiltered glory. This intensely tropical hop features potent flavors reminiscent of coconut, melon, & pineapple with a creamy, sweet mouthfeel.
It is 6.5% ABV with 45 IBUs.
Appearance: Hazy yellow-gold, with a white head. A bit of a fruit juice look.
Smell: Bright and grassy, with some lamb’s quarter or sorrel; possibly some bruised kale or spinach. There’s a sweet fruit note too, with plum, apple or pear, and dried mango.
Taste: Holy Sabro Batman! I’m getting coconut and pineapple flavors on the initial sip, with some earthy cantaloupe rind, and some sweet date sugar. Some herbal qualities, fresh greens, a hint of minty character that’s ephemeral.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with soft malts and a creamy finish.
Overall: It’s quite nice, I’m stoked to have a Neomexicanus hop finally.
