GoodLife Brewing Beach Life P.O.G. Pale Ale
For the past several years, Bend’s GoodLife Brewing has offered up its Beach Life fruited pale ale series, one that started with Pineapple, continued with Mango, and currently features P.O.G. — passion fruit, orange, and guava. The brewery starts with hops known for their fruit qualities and amps it up with the fruit. The description for P.O.G. says:
Beach Life P.O.G Pale Ale is a tropical twist on a classic Pale Ale. Brewed with Amarillo, Cascade, and Idaho 7 hops, these fruit-forward aroma hops, and a moderate dose of P.O.G. “Passionfruit, Orange, and Guava” lend to this very drinkable fruit-forward P.O.G. Pale Ale!
The first sip will have you living your beach life and take you to the islands with your toes in the sand.
GoodLife had provided me with a six-pack along with its Peach Chardonnay (which I wrote about here). Beach Life P.O.G. is 6.2% ABV with 35 IBUs.
Appearance: Copper-orange and unfiltered—there are floaties! (This is fine.) Topped by an off-white head.
Smell: Bright and pungent with fruit—all three fruits are present and it’s particularly fragrant with the passion fruit. There’s notes of orange marmalade, and Hawaiian Punch. It’s really appealing with the fruit.
Taste: The fruit flavor is earthier on the tongue with some orange rind and fruit peel, along with a spicy-fruity hop character. The base is a good pale ale with a fairly neutral malt body and some clean toasty notes. A nice fusion of the malt, fruity hops, and actual fruit.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, with a spicy-earthy-fruity finish.
Overall: It’s a tasty summertime brew with a terrific aroma.
