Oregon Beer News, 01/08/2019
Here is the news in Oregon beer for this Tuesday, January 8. As usual I’ll be updating this post with the latest news as I find it throughout the day, so check back often for updates.
Conversion Brewing (Lebanon) has its monthly Head to Head beer tasting today, featuring a comparison of red and amber ales: “We will pit two beers in the same style against each other and see who comes out on top. This is a blind beer tasting with food pairing sample. We will have an open discussion about the beers and what we like about them. This Head to Head will include two (2) 5 oz. samples of beer, one will be a Red, & the other will be an Amber. Our special complimenting food sample pairing will be fresh mozzarella margherita pizza. Must be 21. Cost is $20. Seating is limited & tickets may be purchased online.” The event starts at 7pm and you can purchase those tickets here.
The 6th annual NW Coffee Beer Invitational is coming up later this month (the 26th), taking place at the Goose Hollow Inn in Portland. “2019 brings the 6th NW Coffee Beer Invitational, the intimate mid-winter festival where talented beverage-makers are asked to get creative with locally-roasted coffee. Curated by Dave Fleming, the brewery selection represents established and brand new breweries, both large and small. This year we are excited to have the reigning GABF gold medal winner in the coffee beer category, Kiitos Brewing from Salt Lake City. There will be a judged competition with the best of show winner announced at the festival (approximately 4:00pm).” Tickets will cost $20 for the glass and 10 taster tickets, available at the door.
Tuesdays are Community Pints days for Deschutes Brewery, where $1 from every pint of beer sold goes to benefit a local non-profit organization. The Bend locations (the Public House and the Tasting Room) are donating to Family Kitchen for the month of January. In Portland, I haven’t yet seen who the Pub is donating to but rest assured it’ll be for a good cause.
The Deschutes Portland Pub is also hosting its latest Chef Dinner Series beer pairing dinner today, featuring “Breakfast in the Dark“: “Love Food? Love beer? Join Deschutes Brewery on Tuesday, January 8th for several courses of each. Learn all about the beers you love (and a few new ones) and the food we are inspired to create to pair with them! Chef Jill Ramseier, with her team, and our Assistant Brewmaster, Jake Harper, will share food and beer stories that celebrate this wonderful PNW we call home. Details: Breakfast in the Dark – An evening brunch celebrating breakfast for dinner, paired with dark beers and breakfast beers!” Cost is $60 and you can buy the tickets online at the link.
Cascade Brewing (Portland) is releasing its Valley Flora 2017 this Friday, January 11, on draft and in 500ml bottles. From the press release: “Valley Flora combines Cascade’s sour red ale with Willamette Valley-grown Pinot Noir grapes using traditional brewing and winemaking techniques. Through native fruit fermentation and extended oak maturation, Valley Flora expresses notes of dark bramble fruit, plum, cherry, earth and oak supported by a balanced tannic structure and lively acidity.” The beer is 10% ABV and will be available at both the Barrel House and the Lodge.
Oregon City Brewing has its Charity Pint Night tonight starting at 5pm, supporting Carus Preschool: “The goal of Carus Preschool is to provide a balance of experiences for preschool children to promote physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. At Carus Preschool we offer children a positive first school experience. Our carefully chosen curriculum supports preschoolers’ academic and social growth in an environment where self-esteem development is paramount.” $1 from every pint sold from 5 to 10pm will benefit Carus.
Culmination Brewing (Portland) has a new hazy IPA on tap today: “Yūbari King is a Japanese Hybrid Melon often given as a gift during Chūgen. It is perfectly round with a pleasantly sweet profile. It is also the name of our latest Hazy IPA brewed for our recent interns last day before returning to Japan. On tap now and not for long.”
Oakshire Brewing (Eugene) also has a hazy IPA hitting its Pub today: “Dinosaurs Will Die: Ledumahadi mafube Hazy IPA brewed with Galaxy, Citra, mosaic, and Moutere, 6.8% ABV, and our first ever 16oz. 4-pack! Brewed with heaps of malted oats, fermented with our hazy yeast strain, and hopped to high heaven. This “Giant Thunderclap at Dawn” will be available at the Pub starting at 4pm today for $16/4pk!”
Standing Stone Brewing (Ashland): The brewery’s January Pints for a Purpose takes place at 5pm tonight: “Please join us this evening, from 5-10PM for our January Pints For A Purpose Event featuring Rogue Valley Mountain Bike Association! For every pint sold between 5PM-10PM, $2 will be donated to their cause. Root beer is also included, so children are welcome!”
Portland’s Gigantic Brewing has its First Taste Tuesday today: “Today’s #firsttastetuesday is Weapon of Mass Seduction Chocolate Oyster Stout. We used rich, silky cacao from Portland’s Woodblock Chocolate (think unsweetened cocoa notes) and Netarts Bay oysters (think salty) from Nevør Shellfish to make this sexy salted chocolate oatmeal stout. Label art by Casey Weldon.”
7 Devils Brewing (Coos Bay) has January beer news, including the fact that the brewery sold half of its Resilience IPA in the first two weeks of release, which is great. Also notes and details on its Dominant 7th Imperial IPA, The Dark is Rising Hazelnut Stout, and currently-tapped barrel beer: “Chinook Redd aged in a Stillwagon black rum barrel on NITRO!”
