Oregon Beer News — 01/28/2021
Happy Thursday! I know it’s not quite Friday but it’ll do. Here’s the news in Oregon beer for this January 28 (it also happens to be the full moon), which I’ll be updating throughout the afternoon. Of course, if you have any tips or news to share, feel free to contact me to be added as well!
McMenamins Hammerhead Ale turns 35
I missed this bit of news earlier in the week, but McMenamins Hammerhead Ale turned 35 on January 25, and the company is celebrating through the 31st with Hammerhead specials at all locations.
Hammerhead Ale’s official birthday was Monday, but 35 is a big one, so we’re still celebrating with $4.75 pints, $10 growler fills and 4-packs to-go of Hammerhead, our King Ludwig Returns special and a Passport stamp. All Hammerhead merchandise (does not include alcohol) is 20% off in our online shop with promo code Hammer20.
Hammerhead is a classic northwest pale ale, brewed with crystal malts and Cascade hops.
Four fresh new beers from Baerlic
Portland’s Baerlic Brewing has “4 fresh AF beers in cans NOW,” available to order online for pickup and delivery.
Never Ender Pale Ale with 100% Comet hops
Myld Stallyns Golden Mild with 100% Golden Promise malt and boiled for 6 long hours for maximum flavor development
Bright Thoughts IPA with a 50/50 blend of pils and wheat malts with boatloads of Mosaic, Citra, Strata and Chinook hops
Sundowner Black Lager is a classic Schwarzbier-style lager with Weyermann Malt and Tettnang Hops that was fermented frosty for maximum crispness.
Look for a pineapple hazy from Coin Toss next week
Coin Toss Brewing of Oregon City is tweaking its High Rocks Hazy IPA for next week’s release:
We snuck a little 🍍🍍🍍 into our latest batch of High Rocks Hazy IPA. We know more than a few of this will appreciate this. It will be on tap and available in 16 oz. cans late next week.
Look for the pineapple to join the blood orange used in the brew. (And that is a great label!)
Conversion’s coffee collab out tomorrow
Lebanon’s Conversion Brewing is releasing what looks to be a coffee blonde ale, Golden Grounds Coffee Ale, brewed in collaboration with Golden Grounds Coffee, tomorrow (Friday the 29th). The beer will be available both on draft and in cans (which are always my preference these days due to the pandemic).
New Ruse brew that’s “disturbingly turbid”
That’s Ruse Brewing‘s phrase, not mine, but it’s in reference to today’s release in cans of new Fluorescent Farm Tart Ale:
More cans today! Are you down with the thickness? This disturbingly turbid tart ale was fermented on a literal pallet full of banana before being transferred onto another pallet of pink guava and pineapple. After that, we said, “this needs more fruit”, so we added another pallet of pink guava and pineapple. Also, instead of listening to our brewing instinct (which we swear we still have) we left all fruit in suspension and canned it. 5.5% ABV. THIS BEER MUST BE STORED COLD!!! Today at 3pm
In light of Oakshire’s recent can recalls, I’d frankly throw a little shade on Ruse for the “MUST BE STORED COLD” requirement for this beer…
New beer from ColdFire
Eugene’s ColdFire Brewing has a non-turbid beer out today, Modern Currency NW Pale Ale.
A sessionable nw pale ale, Modern Currency is generously dry-hopped with Motueka, Simcoe Cryo, Citra, and El Dorado. Combined, these hops balance tropical, lime, and mandarin flavors with the classic orange and resin that helps define the northwest style. Pale malt with a touch of honey and Munich malts allow these unique hops to shine.
Available on draft and in cans.
Hop Valley smiles with a charity beer
Springfield’s Hop Valley Brewing has a new beer out to raise money for a good cause:
Smile Big for a great cause! A portion of proceeds from every 6pack and pint sold of Big Smile Imperial IPA benefits the Cole Parker Randall Foundation in support of finding a cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
Coming in at 9.2% ABV, the Imperial companion to Smile Stash IPA is brewed with a simple malt platform to showcase the generous use of Citra® Cryo Hops®. Please visit SmilesforSMA.org for more details on the CPRF and look for Big Smile on a beer shelf near you!
