Oregon Beer News, 01/09/2013
Happy Hump Day! Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Wednesay, January 9. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Full Sail Brewing (Hood River) announced yesterday their new rotating series of Pub Ales, a line of “classic ales” that are (in essence) seasonals on the shelf for 90 days before rotating onto the next one. Quoting founder Irene Firmat from the press release: “Anyone lucky enough to stop for a pint at our Pub in Hood River, Oregon, will tell you: It’s a spectacular place to share a beer with friends. The Full Sail Pub Series is our attempt to capture that experience in a bottle and share it with all our customers who have not had a chance to see us first hand.” I’m not entirely sure if “classic ales” means classic Full Sail beers from the early days, or just classic styles in general—though Wassail and Pale are both in the schedule so I’d guess the former. First up: Nut Brown Ale, on the shelves now.
Breakside Brewery (Portland): If you like chili pepper beers—and intensely hot ones—Breakside has the beer for you, tapped yesterday: “[Yesterday, we tapped] the hottest beer in the world: Szechuan Blonde…a throwback ’90s-style blonde ‘chili beer,’ made infinitely hotter and more tongue-numbing thanks to prickly ash and red chilies. We may require a waiver for this one!” I like chili beers, but I don’t like really hot; so I’m not sure I’d be brave enough to try this one!
The Green Dragon (Portland) has a Green Dragon Brew Crew release today, featuring Old Deadhead Barrel-aged Barleywine: “Brewed with four malts, two hop varieties, two yeast strains, water and all the stuff that sunshine daydreams are made of. This strong ale was aged in a Rogue AlesDead Guy Whiskey barrel for 3 months and cold conditioned for an additional 5 months. A perfect sipping beer for the rainy months ahead.” 10% abv! The release kicks off at 5pm.
Sky High Brewing (Corvallis): Their new Russian Imperial Stout I mentioned yesterday is hitting the taps today, and they’ve posted specs: 8.5% abv with 85 IBUs. The release party is going on tonight at their tap room from 4 to 6pm, with drawings for swag (they list growlers, t-shirts, gift cards, and logo glasses) and of course plenty of beer on tap.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): There is still 14 tickets available to Deschutes’ Barrel Aged Beer Tasting this Friday, the 11th. This is one of the premier Deschutes events, and costs $45 per person—totally worth it, if you get the chance.
Santiam Brewing (Salem) has both a new beer coming out soon and an expanded tasting room to serve it in: “Coming Soon: The first in our Revolution-West Coast IPA series Ecotopia Dryhopped IPA. Light and dry with a huge citrus and pine resin hop aroma and flavor. This should be on at the newly expanded Santiam Tasting Room in the next few days. We’ll keep you posted. Holler if you’re as excited as we are.” Glad to see growth so early on!
