Oregon Beer News, 01/12/2017
Here’s the Oregon beer news for Thursday, January 12. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.
Baerlic Brewing (Portland): They have a beer release today starting at 4pm, for their Pioneer ESB: “Pioneer ESB is a British- style pale ale brewed with British Golden Promise and Sacchra 50 and Oregon grown hops. Expect rich malts and fruitiness with a balanced bitterness.” Okay, I kind of love the “Oregon Trail” video game screen on the event header for that page and I’d be all over that for a label!
McMenamins Edgefield (Troutdale) has their Meet the Makers beer tasting today from 5 to 8pm, featuring Edgefield Extra Two Year Barrel-Aged Barleywine: “Only two special Hogshead Whiskey barrels were filled with Edgefield Extra 2014 Barleywine two years ago, and those barrels have sat undisturbed ever since. This beer, already a formidable ale in its own right, has in that time matured in to a flavorful, complex behemoth and a true example of classic, barrel-aged English Barleywine. This vintage of the Extra offers toffee, caramel, and warming alcohol character that has been rounded and accentuated by notes of raisin, vanilla, and oak from its two years of aging.” This is one I wish I could taste! (Hint, hint…)
The Bier Stein (Eugene) is hosting Portland’s Culmination Brewing tonight for a beer tasting from 5 to 8pm: “Come try 7 beers from one of Portland’s newest breweries! Just about two years old, Culmination makes a pretty wide range of beers, and we will be tapping up the following: Phaedrus IPA, 4 & 20 Imperial Black IPA, Blackberry Lime Sour, Choco Mountain NITRO, Trou Belle Saison, Elation Imperial IPA, and Foed for Thought, their first foeder-aged beer. A representative will be here handing out free samples and raffling off some gear.”
Portland’s Imperial Bottle Shop is hosting a Boulevard and Firestone Walker night tonight from 5 to 9pm: “Recently, Firestone Walker Brewing Co.’s Matt Brynildson visited Boulevard Brewing Company’s barrel-aging cave to taste beers with Boulevard Brewmaster Steven Pauwels. They spent the afternoon tinkering with different blending percentages before finally deciding on just the right blend for Collabortion No. 6: 45% Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad, 35% Firestone Walker Stickee Monkee, 10% Boulevard Imperial Stout X – Tart Cherry (Whiskey Barrel-aged), and 10% Firestone Walker Velvet Merkin. To celebrate this limited beer collaboration, we’ll be pouring a lineup of Boulevard and Firestone beers.” Sounds like a good night!
Rogue Ales‘ Eastside Portland Pub (formerly the Green Dragon) has an event they are calling The Hop Experience taking place tonight from 6 to 8pm: “This ground-to-glass four-course pairing takes you through the eight varietals of hops grown at Rogue Ales & Spirits hopyard with four distinct IPAs each paired with a dish to highlight the beer and food.” They have a tasting menu lined up with 4 Hop, 6 Hop, 7 Hop, and 8 Hop IPAs.
Yachats Brewing (Yachats): Tonight they will be at Fifth Street Growlers in Corvallis for a tap takeover event from 6 to 9pm: “We are very pleased to be joined by Yachats Brewing this week! This unique brewery has turned the small coastal town of Yachats into a craft beer destination. We will be featuring: Haceta Lightkeeper Barleywine, Chuckie Three Swings Session IPA, Dry Hopped Sour – 100% lactobacillus fermented and hopped by Crosby Farms, and Intellectual Prophet – A Saison with mango and brettanomyces. We hope to see you here!”
Two Shy Brewing (Roseburg) has a new beer hitting the taps today: Chocolate Mint Stout. No details on the beer, but if you’re a fan of mint in your ales then could be worth trying.
Worthy Brewing (Bend): Today they tapped a new collaboration beer: “Just tapped .. WINTER VENOM .. our collaboration with Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider! 75% Lights Out Stout and 25% Rev Nat’s Winter Abbey Spice! The combination creates a roasted coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and clove snakebite that opens up as it reaches snowy-cabin-by-the-fire room temperature!” A Snakebite!
Santiam Brewing (Salem): They have a new bottled beer out that I’d love to get my hands on: “Wine meets beer, in one of the nicest bottle packages we’ve put together. The 3rd release in this season’s choir practice series is released tomorrow – Sangre de Cristo. 11% and 55 IBU. Imperial Stout brewed with 30% Cabernet Sauvingnon grape juice added to fermentation. Dark, smooth, with hints of grape and subtle notes of chocolate. $13 bottle, $140 case.”
Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland): Return of an old favorite! “We’re open, and we just tapped new small batch beer Deadlift Imperial IPA! This robust, hop-packed brew weighs in at 8.8% ABV and 70 IBU. Deadlift is everything you want in an imperial IPA: a huge, fruity hop flavor rounded out by alcohol sweetness and a sturdy caramel malt backbone. This one is packed with Nelson Sauvin hops, which gives the beer its signature fruity flavor and grapefruit and berry aromas. Come on in for a snow day snifter!”
