Oregon Beer News, 01/16/2013
Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Wednesday, January 16. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post with the latest news as I find it throughout the day, so check back often for updates. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Widmer Brothers (Portland) is going to be at The Bier Stein in Eugene tonight for a special Stout Night (featuring the three new stouts I blogged about yesterday): “The cold, dark nights of Winter invite us to imbibe in full-bodied, warming libations. What fits that more than a nice, rich Stout? In this spirit we welcome Widmer Brothers Brewing to The Bier Stein for a special event featuring 4 Stouts! We will have: 1. Milk Stout 2.KGB Russian Imperial Stout 3.Raspberry Russian Imperial Stout 4. Chocolate Russian Imperial Stout. All Stouts will be available by the glass or flight for you sampling pleasure. Shannon from Widmer will be here spreading cheer and answering any questions! Event begins at 6pm!”
Silver Moon Brewing (Bend) is doing a meet the brewer at Portland’s Caps & Corks today starting at 5:30pm, where you can meet brewer Brett Thomas as well as try several different Silver Moon beers: Jack Straw (a copper colored california Common), Amarillo Anxiety (a bright, crisp IPA made with 3 lbs/barrel of sought after Amarillo hops), and Jamaican Stout (a variant on the GABF award winning Dark Side Stout, brewed with flaked rice to mellow and smooth it). This is a good chance to try out some of Silver Moon’s brews if you haven’t before (unless you come to Bend, you’ve probably mostly seen the bottles only).
Lompoc Brewing (Portland) has a fun event going on tonight at their Sidebar starting at 4pm: Baseball IPA Series Movie Night. “Taste & compare the IPAs of our Baseball themed series: Yankee Clipper IPA, brewed in honor of Joe DiMaggio, a Yankee great; Stargell Stars IPA, named in honor of Pittsburgh Pirate great Willie Stargell; Roar of ’84 IPA, named for the Detroit Tigers most spectacular season, their last World Series championship; and Hammerin’ Hank IPA, named after the true Homerun King. For those who prefer soccer to baseball, we’ve rounded out the bases with North End CDA and and Kick Axe Dry Hopped Pale. Enjoy some peanuts, buy a few dogs, then settle in as we show the classic baseball movie Bull Durham starting at 7pm.” I like the themed beer idea, something Lompoc is doing with Science Fiction as well.
Rock Bottom (Portland) apparently has a tapping party today starting at 6pm, featuring a Double IPA paired with chicken and waffles (yum!) and a chipotle margarita. I don’t have any stats on the DIPA but I’d definitely stop by for that with some chicken and waffles!
GoodLife Brewing (Bend) is at the Crowbar in Corvallis tonight for a promo and beer tasting from 6:30 to 9pm. Interestingly enough the beer list that Crowbar posted is: “Descender IPA, Mountain Rescue Dry Hop Pale, SWEET AS passion fruit wheat, Pass Out Stout, Scottish Heart Scotch Ale.” I’ve never heard of the “passion fruit wheat” version of Sweet As; either that’s a typo or GoodLife through something together in a barrel!
Agrarian Ales, one of the newest (nano)breweries in Eugene, is doing a tasting and meet the brewer tonight at Sixteen Tons from 5 to 8pm. As far as I know this is one of the first tastings outside of their own brewery, so this would be a good chance to learn more about them.
