Oregon Beer News, 01/19/2015
Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Whether you have the day off or have to work, take some time to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and message. Meantime, here’s the news in Oregon beer for Monday, January 19. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.
Bend Brewing Company (Bend) is just a month or so away from celebrating their 20th anniversary! February 20 is the big day, and BBC has sent out the word: “Mark your calendars for the evening of Friday, February 20, 2015. There will be music, lots of beer, prizes and fun to be had by the entire family. We’re still hammering out the specific details, but it is sure to be a good old fashioned Central Oregon party, so stay tuned!” I’ll have a separate post on this soon, with more details and some retrospective.
Don’t forget this Saturday at Base Camp Brewing in Portland, their Collabofest is kicking off from noon to 8pm, presented by #PDXNOW and featuring 10 breweries brought together to brew two specialty collaboration beers each—so that 10 different beers will be available to sample. (Actually 11, since the Ex Novo and Gigantic beers are intended to be blended.) New School has the full beer list. Cost is $20 or $35, depending on which package you want.
Rogue Ales (Newport): They have released a new special-label IPA poking fun at some non-beer-related news lately: PDX Carpet IPA. The story behind it? The Portland Airport is replacing its (some would say) “iconic” carpet of nearly 30 years, which has apparently caused a bit of an outcry among people who think the carpet is as iconic as Portland itself. Me, I’m just amused by Rogue’s bottle, which of course features the (old) carpet design. (I don’t know—but assume—that it’s simply a re-package of one of their regular IPAs.)
Uptown Market (Beaverton): From their brewery today they have a new beer out: “Tonight at Uptown: stop by and check out the debut of our newest beer! Its an Imperial Bourbon Oak-aged Stout. Cheers to new beer!” I don’t know the stats but that’s always a style of beer worth checking out. Update: Uptown Market posted more details on FB: “Its an Imperial Bourbon Oak-aged Stout. Smooth, delicious, 10% ABV. The name of the new brew will be unveiled a bit later today when it goes on tap.”
There are a couple of other fests going on this weekend in addition to Collabofest mentioned above, starting with the Goose Hollow Inn‘s NW Coffee Beer Invitational: “The Northwest’s two favorite brews are in the spotlight again for the 2nd NW Coffee Beer Invitational. Sixteen talented brewers were asked to create freshly-brewed beer made with locally-roasted coffee. With the emphasis on flavors, and an abv of 7% or less, this event promises to surprise us with both provocative and inspired combinations.” For $15 (which gets you the glass plus eight taster tickets) you can sample some of these amazing coffee-themed beers from noon to 7pm this Saturday the 24th.
Then there is the Portland U-Brew‘s fourth annual Westmoreland/Sellwood Winter Brew Fest taking place this Friday and Saturday from noon to 10pm each day. “Four local winter beers plus six staff made winter beers on tap! Most over 9%. $20.00 gets you a P.U.B. glass and 10 tickets (tickets worth $1.00). Live music . Friday and Saturday night kids welcome. TWO DAYS. Noon-10pm.”
