Oregon Beer News, 01/23/2014
Here is the news in Oregon beer for Thursday, January 23. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend) is having a good news day today. In addition to both the Bend Pub and Portland Pub holding their Class of ’88 Belgian Style Ale tasting event (featuring side-by-side tastings of theirs and Goose Island’s version of the beer, food specials, and more), news hit the papers today that they are planning on expanding—possibly even back east a la Sierra Nevada. “Deschutes Brewery, one of the nation’s biggest craft brewers, is planning the largest, most expensive expansion in its 25-year history. Along with Bend, brewery founder Gary Fish said, the company is considering other locations — including the East Coast — although it will always call Bend home.” Nothing definitive, yet, but an eastern expansion isn’t ruled out either. Some interesting numbers in that article, and this is something that will be watched closely in the weeks and months to come.
Breakside Brewery (Portland) is holding a “blowout” tap takeover today at N.W.I.P.A. from 6 to 9pm, featuring “Eight different IPAs from Breakside! Wanderlust, Hop Burst, Trinidad Scorpian Double, Safe Word Triple IPA and more! This is going to be off the hook!” Three or four of those will be experimental IPAs as well. Breakside is on a roll, having brewed 100 beers in 2013 and getting set for their new Salted Caramel Stout bottle release next week. If you’re an IPA fan, head over to N.W.I.P.A. tonight!
Belmont Station (Portland): Their Bigger, Badder, Blacker Week continues today with a “California Night” featuring Green Flash Brewing‘s Chuck Silva in the house from 5 to 8pm: “Chat with Green Flash’s Chuck Silva and sip some Silva Stout as we explore the dark side of our southern neighbors. We also will be pouring: The Bruery Cuir, Stone Espresso Imperial Russian Stout and Bear Republic Old Baba Yaga 2009.”
Cascade Lakes Brewing (Redmond) has their 20th anniversary party continuing today with two different celebrations: Bend’s Broken Top Bottle Shop is throwing a party with live music, specialty beers, and a meet the brewer with John Van Duzer from 6 until 9pm; and in Eugene The Bier Stein is also holding a party with 20th Anniversary IPA and other beers on tap, from 5 to 8pm.
Golden Valley Brewery (McMinnville): Today they are celebrating the second anniversary of their Beaverton location all day long! Along with the release of their Atlas Elevator Doppelbock, there is also free appetizers, $2 beers, and prizes and giveaways happening.
Fort George Brewery (Astoria): Their unlikely-yet-good-and-popular coffee IPA, Java the Hop, is arriving in cans—and the White Owl Social Club in Portland tonight is hosting the release party for the beer tonight starting at 6:30. “Astoria’s premier purveyors of potent potables, Fort George Brewery, and Portland’s brainiest bean lovers at Coava Coffee Roasters have collaborated to create a monster brew. It’s JAVA THE HOP, a unique coffee IPA! Come to this release party and enjoy a pint of Java the Hop on draft, as well as Fort George’s Hogsfather Imperial Porter and Next Adventure Black IPA.”
Rogue Eugene Public House (Eugene): Tonight is their weekly meet the brewer event taking place from 5:30 to 6:30pm. “From Track Town we’ve got 200m IPA, Triple Jump Pale, Honey Orange Wheat, Hurdle CDA, and Pole Vault Coffee Porter! As well as a huge selection of Rogue beers. Come see Sam and have a pint.”
