Oregon Beer News — 02/04/2021
Here’s some late afternoon beer news from around Oregon for you to help get through this Thursday. As usual I’ll be periodically updating this post through the rest of the day, so come back occasionally to see if there’s anything new!
OSU Fermentation Science Students Honored with Jack Joyce Scholarships
The Jack Joyce Scholarship was created by Rogue Ales (of which Joyce was the founder) and Columbia Distributing in 2014 to support students of Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science program, and last week Rogue and Columbia awarded two students with this year’s scholarships. From Rogue’s press release:
Two Oregon State University Fermentation Science students were awarded a combined total of $40,000 through the Jack Joyce Scholarship last Thursday night in a virtual ceremony. The Jack Joyce Scholarship, established in 2014 by Columbia Distributing and Rogue Ales & Spirits as a tribute to the late Rogue founder Jack Joyce, was created to further students’ passion and desire for fermentation science, including craft brewing.
To date, the scholarship has awarded over $400,000 to 34 students, including Alyssa Thibodeau and Cade Jobe, the 2020 winners.
This year’s student recipients weren’t named in the release, but that’s a fantastic opportunity for them.
Hopworks Urban Brewery releases Juicy Bear IPA
Portland’s Hopworks Urban Brewery announced the release of its spring seasonal, Juicy Bear IPA today. The beer returns for its second year; details:
Juicy Bear IPA is a juicy, full-bodied, yet totally crushable IPA brewed with Nelson Sauvin, Hallertau Blanc, and Lemondrop hops, which bring aromas of guava, white grape, and gooseberry. The can’s original artwork was hand-drawn by artist Martin Ontiveros.
The beer clocks in at 6.5% ABV and 40 IBU. Juicy Bear IPA is available now until June 2021.
Hopworks’ brewpubs are celebrating the launch of the seasonal with a Juicy Bear IPA braised pork sandwich stuffed with house-made coleslaw, Juicy Bear IPA-braised pork, grilled pineapple, pickled jalapenos, house-made Ferocious BBQ sauce, and mayonnaise on a toasted pub bun.
Wild Ride’s PorterMania returns
Starting Monday, February 8th, and running through the 15th, Wild Ride Brewing‘s annual PorterMania event returns—albeit a bit different due to covid, starting with running for a week instead of one day.
PorterMania is back! We will be pouring a fantastic menu of Porters all week long. This year we collaborated with local businesses to create unique flavors with something for everyone. Enjoy a pint or a flight here or take a crowler to enjoy at home.
You’ll be able to drink at the brewery (seated outside, of course), or take crowlers home. From the poster image it looks like the featured beers are Nut Crusher Peanut Butter Porter, Laughing Face Imperial Coconut Porter, Nutty Joe Jr. Porter, Justy’s Habanero Porter (with Justy’s Jelly), Sweet Oasis Chocolate Orange Creamsicle Porter (with Sweet Oasis Sweet Shoppe), and Ida’s Cherry Chocolate Cupcake Porter (with Ida’s Cupcakes).
New beers at Initiative…
Redmond’s Initiative Brewing has a new beer on tap: Realistic Air Guitar, listed as 7.7% ABV with 0 IBUs (not sure if that’s a typo). It’s a hazy New England-style IPA, “with aromas of dank citrus.”
…and at ColdFire
While over in Eugene, ColdFire Brewing has a new pilsner to check out: The Bavarian Daydream Dry-Hopped German Pilsner, on draft and in cans.
Bavarian Daydream is inspired by our journey through the German countryside. Remembering those days fondly we dry-hopped it to marry our love for both regions. We honored the classic underpinnings of the style by using a blend of Weyerman pilsner malts and imported German hops that impart notes of rich honey and subtly floral, citrus, and melon. Close your eyes, take a sip, and daydream that you’re in Bavaria.
Worthy Brewing turned 8 today!
This one snuck up on me, but Bend’s Worthy Brewing quietly celebrated its eighth anniversary today:
We wanted to say a giant “THANK YOU” to everyone who’s supported us over the years. We couldn’t do anything we do without the support of this amazing community and we couldn’t be more grateful! ❤️
While this last year has been a little rough (understatement) you guys made it one to remember and we wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Congratulations! I’ve got some Worthy writing material coming up later this month.
Baerlic Stout Month release
Portland’s Baerlic Brewing offers up its first special release for Stout Month:
AVAILABLE NOW! For our first special release for #stoutmonth, we bring you our 2019 WoodWorker Pancake House Imperial Cocoa Maple Coffee Stout. In late 2019, we filled a blend of freshly dumped Booker’s bourbon and maple syrup casks with our Pancake House Imperial Stout where it sat untouched for 14 months. And to brighten things up a bit, we again conditioned it on additional fresh coffee from Water Avenue Coffee.
Plus Imperial Bottle Shop’s Stout Month plans
Also in Portland, Imperial Bottle Shop is celebrating Stout Month but not hosting events, simply offering a great lineup of stout on tap.
We hope this gives everyone time to safely enjoy some sinfully dark beer that just so happens to be perfect for these beautifully overcast days.
We’ll be offering $15 imperial stout sampler trays. They include tastings of four awesome imperial stouts that will rotate through the month. We’re starting with Barley Brown’s Brew Havoc Imperial Stout, Boneyard Beer Barrel-Aged Suge Knite, Founders Nitro CBS, and Stoup Brewing Raspy Angel Bourbon Stout.
How about non-alcoholic stout from Deschutes?
Deschutes Brewery has a stout for you—its non-alcoholic Irish Stout, albeit rebranded as “Irish Style Dark.”
Traditional Irish-style dark with coffee-like roasted malt character, light chocolate and a dry, light bodied drinking experience.
This NA beer is 0.5% ABV or less, with 30 IBUs.
New barrel release from Oregon City
Oregon City Brewing has just the thing if you’re craving a barreled beer: The Mash Pit.
Are you ready to rock?!? Then throw some bows and hop into the Mash Pit, our newest barrel release that will make you want to pogo. We took an imperial blonde ale and blended it with tart cherries, and then shoved it into @rosecitydistilling whiskey barrels for three months. Speaking of three, we also added three whole Madagascar vanilla beans to each barrel, resulting in a hardcore beer that’s very smooth, a little sweet, and more dangerous than the wall of death. Pit in where you fit in.
And don’t pass up this barrel brew from Wolf Tree
Newport’s Wolf Tree Brewery also has just the thing for your wooded cravings:
NEW BEER ALERT! With way more than five on it, Operation Stackola is a gin-barrel-aged IPA! This easy drinking beer is totally unique with plenty of IPA hop flavor and just a touch of gin in the nose and on the finish. We open at 3pm today. On draft now!
