Oregon Beer News, 02/06/2014
Happy Arctic Blast Day! Here’s the Oregon beer news for Thursday, the 6th of February. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.
Full Sail Brewing (Hood River): Today is the release of their much-coveted Bourbon Aged Imperial Stout and at the Hood River Pub they are holding a special horizontal tasting of the beer starting at 5pm: “For 12 months our Imperial Stout has been aging in three types of bourbon whiskey casks — Maker’s Mark, Heaven Hill, and Four Roses. Our final release is a blend of all three, but we reserved some of each from the individual barrels for a stellar horizontal tasting. Compare the distilleries’ barrels to the final blend with us at our Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout release party, at our Brew Pub in Hood River on Thursday February 6th at 5pm.”
Speaking of Imperial Stouts, The Bier Stein in Eugene has a doozy of a pouring going on all day today: a four-year vertical flight of Deschutes Brewery‘s The Abyss! “An Imperial Stout saved is an Imperial Stout earned, so the saying goes. Well, we’ve saved, and are passing the interest on to you! Starting in 2010, we’ve stashed away kegs of this limited release black behemoth. These beers change over time, some flavors mellow, others emerge, and are generally great. We will tap the beers at the beginning of the day, so you can get a flight with lunch and dinner! Deschutes rep Chad will be here from 7-9pm to raffle off some growlers, wearables, and glasses. To clear your palate, we’ll have the new Pine Drops IPA and Red Chair (on nitro) on tap as well!” Definitely not one to miss today if you’re near Eugene!
The BeerMongers (Portland) today is hosting a Fort George Stout Month Tap Takeover starting at 6pm tonight. “Join Tim Ensign, The BeerMongers, and Fort George Brewery for a night of delicious darkness. We will be offering an 8-tap preview of some of the more unique stouts that Ft. George will be premiering this month.” They’ll have some eight stouts on tap tonight.
McMenamins Old Church & Pub (Wilsonville) has a meet the brewer and beer tasting event tonight starting at 5pm—but they don’t have any details on the page to know what the beer is! You’ll just have to stop by and see.
Meanwhile over at Portland’s McMenamins Fulton Pub, they have a limited-edition beer tasting tonight at 5pm featuring Oak-Aged Porter: “This our standard porter aged on American oak. The woody aroma and mild flavor of the medium toast American oak complements the rich chocolate flavor and bready sweet malt profile. The hops play a back-up role in this beer, allowing the mellow flavor of the oak to share the spot light. Overall this beer has a pleasant sweet quality. Smooth, rich, and delicious!”
Laurelwood Brewing (Portland) has a special IPA event taking place at three of their pubs (all but the Airport, basically) that they are dubbing IPA’s Across the Wood. “In celebration of this years National IPA Championship, all Laurelwood pubs will be tapping 4 of our most sought after IPA’s at once. Starting at 5pm on Feb. 6th, all three Portland area pubs will tap Workhorse IPA (2009 Champion), Green Elephant IPA, Megafauna IIPA (2013 Champion) and Green Mammoth IIPA at the same time. Special IPA flights all night and or until we run out! Don’t miss this rare occasion to try all four at once and wish the Laurelwood Brew Crew good luck in this years competition. ”
Worthy Brewing (Bend): Their anniversary week continues today with Thirsty Thursday, where they are “showing our appreciation to YOU by offering cheap Worthy pints all day (except the big, heavy stuff).”
