Oregon Beer News, 02/08/2013
Here’s the Oregon beer news for Friday, February 8 and the weekend. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated.
The KLCC Microbrew Festival in Eugene kicks off today! This long-running Fest is a benefit for the KLCC radio station (public radio from Lane Community College) and this weekend will feature “57 breweries serving more than 140 craft beers”—very impressive—and also offer up some special collaboration beers from Eugene-area breweries. It takes place from 5 to 11pm today, and 1 to 11pm tomorrow; if you didn’t purchase advance tickets by yesterday, it’s $15 at the door which includes your souvenir glass and 3 tasting tickets. This is definitely an event to attend if you can make it to Eugene!
Three Creeks Brewing (Sisters) is offering up a special “Beer 101” seminar/session tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 4pm for $10: “Learn about Basic Beer Ingredients, the Brewing Process (via TCBC brewery tour) and Sensory Analysis. A full taster tray is included in the $10.00 price, for which we usually charge $15.00. For those of you that think like I do, the answer is YES you have to take the course to receive the taster tray.” They still have slots available if you’d like to attend (and you’ll be in Sisters tomorrow), call (541) 549-1963 to get in on it.
This Sunday is the 4th annual My Beery Valentine presented by Brewpublic and Portland’s Saraveza Bottle Shop, all day from 11am until 8pm: “Once again we have brought together some of our favorite local breweries for a tap list that will make even the most experienced beer connoisseurs blush. Special Holiday treats from Saraveza’s own SugarPimp too!” They will have 10 great seasonal beers on tap from which you can build your own flight; with treats such as Alameda’s My Bloody Valentine (saison with blood oranges), 10 Barrel’s Raspberry Crush, and Upright’s Chocolate Stout, this is sure to be a must-attend this weekend.
Gigantic Brewing (Portland): They are releasing their 2 newest beers tonight (from 3 to 8pm at their brewery for the release party) and are also showcasing the art that makes up the labels—this will be a great stop tonight in Portland if you can make it: “Join us on Friday February 8th for the release of our two newest bottled seasonal beers – The End of Reason & Time Traveler. In addition to the new beers, we will also have new art work on the walls from label artists Buzz Parker and Winston Smith. Buzz Parker will be in attendance showing new work done specifically for this event. We will also be showing incredible b/w photography from Gigantic Beertender Stephanie Towell. Join us for great art and great beer!” The End of Reason is a “Petite Belgian-style Quad” (8.3% abv) and The Time Traveler is a porter.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend) has a new beer just tapped today at their Bend pub: “Framboise Abbey Ale (sour quad aged with Raspberries).” I don’t know the stats—it hasn’t fully hit their “On Tap” page yet—but this sounds like it could be a great Valentine’s Day beer!
