Oregon Beer News, 02/09/2015
Happy Monday! Here’s the news in Oregon beer for the second week of February. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please let me know and I can get that updated as well.
One of the big events this week has become one of the biggest beer events spanning the entire state—Zwickelmania! It’s taking place this Saturday, February 14 (yes, Valentine’s Day) from 11 to 4, and if you’re unfamiliar the one-line description is, “the annual one-day event in Oregon when breweries open their doors to the casual and hardcore beer fans.” Free tours, samples, and special events are being held by all the various participating breweries. Worth checking out—and if you want some additional fun, print out and play Zwickel Bingo to take along with you!
Belmont Station (Portland) is continuing their Bigger, Badder, Blacker! event today (and through Wednesday the 11th), pouring “big, dark, luscious beers” in honor of Stout Month (which all started with Astoria’s Fort George Brewery). Today’s theme is Stone Cold Monday: “Featuring 2013 Imperial Russian Stout, 2013 Espresso IRS, Woot Stout & more.” Don’t miss it!
Speaking of Fort George Brewery, their annual Festival of Dark Arts taking placing Valentine’s Day this Saturday: “Let your senses feast on the Dark Arts Gallery, tattoo artistry, belly dancing, tarot card reading, and tintype photography. Stay warm by the blacksmith forge, glass blowers, and fire dancers. Live music will play all day upstairs, and wherever you go, the stouts will follow – over 55 eclectic beers in total!” This massive, unique block party runs from noon til 10pm, but if you don’t have tickets… they are sold out. Hopefully you have yours!
Also on Valentine’s Day at Saraveza in Portland is the sixth annual Brewpublic’s My Beery Valentine—technically it runs both Saturday and Sunday, and feature a special lineup of Valentine’s-themed beers. Plus: “Lovingly Curated Valentines Flights, a Hugging Booth, Cozy Ambiance and Comfort Food are sure to score you points with your sweetheart or sweetheart to be.” Some additional details over at Brewpublic.
Double Mountain Brewery (Hood River) has a new beer out: “We teamed up with our friends 10 Speed Coffee Hood River and created a slightly sweet, malty brown ale with expertly roasted Guatemala beans. 1st Crack Coffee Porter is now on tap!”
Barley Brown’s (Baker City) is the winner of this year’s IPA Month challenge that was taking place at Portland’s Hawthorne Hophouse last month! John Foyston has the story: “IPA Month at Hophouse was a blind tasting of a dozen Oregon IPAs in January to determine the best Oregon IPA, and more than 800 voters have chosen Barley Brown’s Pallet Jack is the official Best Oregon IPA of 2015. Barley Brown’s Pallet Jack will be available on tap all year at both Hophouse locations.”
