Oregon Beer News, 02/13/2015
Happy Friday the 13th, and Zwickel/Valentine/President’s Day weekend! Here’s the news in Oregon beer for all of those and more. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.
Ninkasi Brewing (Eugene) is embracing the Friday the 13th-ness, by hosting a series of “zombie pub crawls in 18 cities across our distribution footprint, including Portland and Eugene” today in honor of the year-round release of their Dawn of the Red India Red Ale. Zombie costumes are highly encouraged, and you can find details (and ticket information) for each zombie pub crawl here, so if you want to join, find your city and go for it! (Sadly none here in Bend.)
As if you need any more reminders, tomorrow is Zwickelmania! From 11am to 4pm many of the state’s breweries will be opening their door for tours, samples from the zwickel, meet the brewers, and more. The Brewers Guild’s page has all the up-to-date listings of who’s participating, as well as maps and printable PDFs for each region (the major ones also have shuttles running). And of course I have to plug my own Zwickel Bingo card generator that you can print out and play along as you’re zwickel-ing. Enjoy the day!
Hop Valley Brewing (Springfield): Today they are celebrating their 6th anniversary! “Come celebrate our 6-Year Anniversary on Friday, February 13 at our Tasting Room. The party starts at 6pm with live music by “Taste.” Enjoy dinner and beer specials, a new beer release, brewery tours and tastings, and more until 9pm.” This will be at their Eugene tasting room, on West 1st Avenue (apparently not the Springfield brewpub). They will also be releasing their new Imperial Red, Fri-dye the 13th, for the party. Congrats on 6 years!
Hair of the Dog (Portland): Cherry Adam 2015 is being released today (Friday) in bottles! (It has been available for drinking at the tasting room for about a week now.) According to brewer/owner Alan Sprints (on Facebook): “The Cherry Adam release will be Friday, February 13th at 10:30am. The 2015 bottling will be $10 a bottle, $240 a case, two case limit per person.” The bottles are 12 ounce. If you want to get your hands on some, don’t waste any time getting down there.
Upright Brewing (Portland): They have a release of their own today, one of their more popular beers: “Upright OYSTER STOUT returns! Draft only this year. Release Party and Oyster Social with fresh bivalves and condiments Friday 2/13 at the Upright Tasting Room!” You can’t miss an Oyster Social… especially right before Valentine’s Day! <wink wink, nudge nudge> (Speaking of, Upright will not be participating in Zwickelmania tomorrow because of Valentine’s Day.)
Fort George Brewery (Astoria) has their Festival of Dark Arts taking place tomorrow—their carnival of stout block party featuring all manner of entertainment and many, many stout beers. Now, tickets are sold out—but if you really want to go, haunt craigslist to see if anyone has any for sale. The Festival has grown over the years to become one of Oregon’s big(ger) beer events, so it’s definitely one to check out sometime. Maybe this year?
Saraveza in Portland is celebrating Valentine’s Day with Brewpublic and the 6th annual My Beer Valentine, taking place both Saturday and Sunday all day and featuring “Lovingly Curated Valentines Flights, a Hugging Booth, Cozy Ambiance and Comfort Food.” They have an eclectic and delicious taplist lined up—how could you go wrong?
Migration Brewing (Portland) is celebrating their 5th anniversary tomorrow, sharing the day with both Valentine’s and Zwickelmania—in addition to Zwickelmania tours from 11 to 4 they will have specialty beer available and live music in the evening. The beers available are: “We will also have a number of beers that have been aging right here at Migration: 4th Anniversary Imperial Stout…Aged 1 Year (Draft Only); Cross Pollination honey Belgian made with local honey from Bee Local…Aged over 1 year (Draft Only); And our 5 Year Anniversary Beer: The Big 5 Imperial IPA…Fresh (Available on Draft and in very limited 22 oz. Bottles)”
Worthy Brewing (Bend): Today is their “Firkin Friday” which kicks off at 4pm, and today features Worthy IPA with Southern Cross hops from New Zealand. Pints from the firkin will be $3 until it’s gone. And, they have a new beer generally available as well: “On tap today from the Heart and Soul Series: Fussy X-331 Pale, made with experimental aroma hops from Oregon State University and Indie Hops. Let’s get fussy and dissect away.” Read more about it here.
The BeerMongers (Portland) on Sunday the 15th is hosting Portland’s Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider for a special cider tasting starting at 4pm: “Join The BeerMongers as we host our friends from Reverend Nat’s for an evening of barrel aged ciders. We had a similar event in September of 2014 for our 5th Anniversary. The cider makers at Reverend Nat’s filled six different barrels with Lorrie’s Gold and Revelation Newtown Pippin. The cider was aged in the barrels for over 6 months and then we tasted them and blended them together to create the final product. We will have all six single barrel ciders on draft as well as the final blend. These batches of cider were small and this will be your last chance to try these wonderful libations.”
Claim 52 Brewing (Eugene) has a beer release today that looks interesting: “Open at 4:00 with the release of Olivia 9 Brettanomyces Bottle Conditioned Belgian Dark Strong! Come get yours- only #150 available.” Limit 4 per person.
