Oregon Beer News, 02/23/2015
Happy Monday! Here’s the Oregon beer news as we enter the last week of February. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please let me know and I can get that updated as well.
Obligatory Pliny the Younger mention: Once again it’s that time of year where Russian River Brewing‘s super-limited triple IPA Pliny the Younger is trickling into Oregon, and a number of beer bars and locations are holding special, limited tappings. Ezra over at the New School helpfully has an updated list of Oregon appearances of PtY, and I know The Bier Stein in Eugene has already sold out of tickets for the beer. (None, I note, are in Central Oregon, or even outside Portland and Eugene.)
This Saturday, the 28th, is the 2015 edition of the Malt Ball taking placing in Portland at the Wonder Ballroom—the brewers-paired-with-bands music/beer fest: “What happens when you put together the two best things in the world: delicious beer and rocking bands? You get the third annual Malt Ball, a weekend-long fest that celebrates the staggering abundance of terrific music in our city AND the finest craft breweries that the Portland area has to offer. Your pals at the Mercury have partnered with the Oregon Brewers Guild to bring you the best-sounding beer festival in town, or the best-tasting music fest — whichever way you want to look at it.” Tickets are $25 and they have a great lineup of participating breweries.
N.W.I.P.A. (Portland): Their 2nd annual Triple IPA Fest is coming up this Saturday, the 28th, running noon to close. Brewpublic has the details: “The six taps to kick off Triple IPA Fest will feature Barley Brown’s Tankslapper and CHAOS, Boneyard’s Notorious, Breakside’s Safe Word, Pfriem’s Triple IPA and 10 Barrel Boise’s Lupulin Trip, which Shawn “BigHopBrewer” Kelso made specifically for Triple IPA Fest. Entry is $10 and includes commemorative glassware and 6 tickets. Additional tickets are available for $1. One ticket equals 2 oz. N.W.I.P.A will be pouring in 2, 4, and 6 ounce increments.” (No Pliny?)
StormBreaker Brewing (Portland): This Saturday they also have a fest coming up, the Brewstillery Festival: “Breweries and Distilleries teaming up to create the perfect pairings. Advance tix on sale now on our website for $20, $25 day of the event, which includes tasting glass and 10 tickets.” They are having 18 breweries and 12 distilleries and I’d be pretty curious to see a list of planned pairings. Sounds like fun!
Sour fans! Portland’s Cascade Brewing is kicking off 5 days of their returning Tart Fruit Fest this Wednesday the 25th! “The Tart Fruit Fest is back! We will be launching the fest on Wednesday, Feb. 25th and pouring until Monday, Mar. 2nd, during normal business hours. We will be featuring past live barrels that contain fruit, vintage blends, and some unique one-off projects… Many fruit fest beers are only 2-3 gallons and will go fast, but we will keep an ever changing list of great beers throughout the fest; we will post to Twitter & Facebook when taps change out. We will also have a number of vintage bottles for sale.” Not to be missed!
Santiam Brewing (Salem) is doing a meet the brewer event at Salem’s Venti’s Taphouse this Wednesday the 25th: “Join Santiam Brewing for a special night at Venti’s Taphouse this Wednesday 2/25 from 6-8 PM. We’ll be pouring 8 beers, giving away swag all evening. Fill a Santiam growler and get a free pint glass.”
