Oregon Beer News, 03/11/2015
Here is the news in Oregon beer for Wednesday, the 11th of March. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Widmer Brothers Brewing (Portland) has a new beer out today, Replay IPA, and fittingly the launch party is taking place tonight at Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade in Portland: “Widmer Brothers is releasing a new session-style IPA, Replay IPA. Admission is free to the public (21+) after 7pm, and there will be drink specials and giveaways throughout the night. Patrons will be given game credits with every Replay IPA purchase.” As a computer geek and child of the 80s I’m having a hard time imagining a better venue for a beer release… The party runs from 7pm until closing. As for the beer itself, Replay is 4.5% abv and 40 IBUs, and will be hitting shelves the week of the 23rd.
Block 15 Brewery (Corvallis) will be in Portland tonight at The Hop and Vine for a “tap invasion” — think tap takeover turned to 11: “About once a year, we’ve been privileged to have our friends at Corvallis’ Block 15 Brewing invade our taps for an evening of fermented fun. Previously, we only had 8 taps to fill, but with the expansion of taps into our Bottleshop Bar, we can now pour more, making this year’s takeover the best & biggest yet! We’ve been patiently sitting on some of the more cellar-worthy gems from their barrel program and will be filling out the list with even more wild-fermented beers, some of B15’s award-worthy hoppy beers, and standout selections from their core lineup for variety.” They have a great lineup listed on the event page, and the fun kicks off at 5pm.
McMenamins Thompson Brewery (Salem) has their monthly “Meet Your Maker” event today from 4 to 7pm, where you get a chance to meet brewer Jen Kent and sample some specialty beer. This month’s beer is OwlCapone DIPA: “What better inspiration for a big beer than an owl taking over one of Salem’s beautiful parks! This bad boy, though not full of sharp talons, does have an upfront hop profile. Spread your wings with this Citra hop packed bad boy. Just don’t take my hat.” It’s 8% abv with 85 IBUs.
Fort George Brewery (Astoria): Today is their 8th anniversary! “It’s not just any #BurgerWednesday, it’s also Fort George’s anniversary. Eight years ago, on March 11th, Fort George Brewery + Public House opened its doors. Come down to the pub and raise a pint. And join the birthday celebration on Friday, March 27th with live music from Cave Singers and a very special guest you won’t want to miss.” Congrats! Head down there and wish them happy birthday!
Cascade Brewing (Portland) has a new special beer release today: “Super excited for tonight! At 6pm, we’re releasing our collaboration with Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider, Strawberry Pippin – a blend of Rev. Nat’s Newtown Pippin cider with Cascade’s sour Strawberry ale. Staff from both production crews will be on hand.” So in essence, a Snakebite. Sounds like it could be delicious!
Breakside Brewery (Portland) also has a new beer release, and with their current pace of releases I’m wondering if they’re targeting another 100 different beers brewed this year. “Introducing our new farmhouse fruit & funk series beer – FORTUNELLA. A Belgian-style Wit bier made with Kumquats that is lightly tart with a huge aroma of citrus that finishes spicy and dry.” Can’t say as that doesn’t sound delicious either!
Twisted Snout Brewery (Toledo): I don’t get to write nearly enough about this near-coastal brewery. Their St. Patrick’s Day plans are as follows: they’ll have green beer (literally?), corned beef and cabbage, live music with The Moore/Bush Project, and a limerick contest, all from 5 to 8pm.
GoodLife Brewing (Bend) continues to expand! Yesterday they took delivery of a new 240-barrel tank (nicknamed Charlize). Stacked up against the others they are getting an impressive amount of capacity—I’m not even sure what they are up to now, frankly, but it’s great to see the growth.
And on the other end of the spectrum here in Bend, Monkless Belgian Ales (our newest and smallest), posted an update on Facebook—more beer! “All you fans of Dubbel or Nothing-it’s back! We dropped a couple kegs at humm kombucha over the weekend. Make your way to the Humm taproom on 2nd Street and grab a glass.”
The Green Dragon (Portland): Tonight’s Green Dragon Brew Crew release is featuring Vienna Sunrise Lager: “The original amber lager style. Vienna Sunrise Lager has caramelized navel orange pastry and honeysuckle flavors with a refreshing finish. This beer is Vienna and Munich malt focused, brewed with 100% Hallertauer hops and then traditionally lagered for 3 months.” It begins at 5pm.
