Oregon Beer News, 03/14/2013
Happy Pi Day! Celebrate the day with a beer and pie, or at least 3.14 beers, while you read the Oregon beer news! As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Belmont Station (Portland) has a tasting with Portland’s Burnside Brewing today from 5 to 8pm: “Refresh your memory and taste buds with some of Portland’s finest beers, courtesy of our friends at Burnside Brewing: taste the IPA, Stock Ale, Oatmeal Pale, and Sweet Heat, a wheat Ale with Apricot Puree and (judiciously applied) Scotch Bonnet Peppers.” Sweet Heat is one of the best chili pepper beers I’ve ever had.
McMenamins Edgefield (Troutdale) has a limited-edition beer tasting today featuring a St. Patrick’s-appropriate themed beer: Phil and Frida’s Irish Whiskey Stout (on nitro). “In honor of two true friends who really liked a good sip of whiskey, we’ve aged our St. Patrick’s Day McMenamins Irish Stout in a pair of Edgefield Distillery’s Hogshead Whiskey barrels. Over the course of a month in those American oak barrels, this dry stout has been infused with flavors of toffee, mild unsweetened chocolate, and the barest hint of whiskey. This ebony-colored ale is poured on a nitro tap to add a bit of body and to top off the pint with a thick, long-lasting head. A moderate hop bitterness balances pleasingly with the hearty roast-malt backbone, while tiny nitrogen bubbles enhance the sensation on your taste buds with a smooth, silky creaminess. One sip will have your head in the Emerald Isle clouds, and your glass raising a toast to Phil and Frida.” It starts at 5pm and when it’s gone, it’s gone.
The Green Dragon (Portland) has a meet the brewer and tasting tonight starting at 5pm featuring Seattle’s Hale’s Ales; the beers will be tapped at 5 and the meet the brewer portion kicks off at 6.
Vertigo Brewing (Hillsboro) is celebrating Pi Day with a special “One Day, One Keg” celebration kicking off at 4pm: “Key Lime Pi(e optional) Blonde (aka Tropical Blonde) available in glass, pint, grenade and growler. Bring dinner or a snack, we’ll have Buffett on the radio & beer on tap.” That’s the way to do it!
The Platypus Pub (Bend) is hosting Portland’s Base Camp Brewing for a simultaneous release party/tasting for Base Camp’s new Magnetic Meredian IPA which is hitting the taps at the brewery as well. The Platypus’s event takes place from 6:30 to 8pm and in addition to having two Base Camp beers on tap they’ll be sampling a few others brought down special from Portland.
BridgePort Brewing (Portland) is doing a Brewer’s Dinner at Salty’s on the Columbia tonight starting at 6:30pm—hopefully it’s not too late to get in on this if you’re interested. “Join us at Salty’s on March 14th for one of their famed brewer’s dinners. Our brewer will work with their head chef to pair 5 of our beers with five of their dishes for a dinner you won’t soon forget. $65/person – Call Salty’s to make your reservation now! (503) 288-4444”
