Oregon Beer News, 03/20/2013
Spring has sprung—today is the vernal equinox, the first day of spring, so why not celebrate with a Bock? And here’s the Oregon beer news to enjoy along with that beer. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
McMenamins Crystal Ballroom (Portland) has a limited-edition beer tasting going on today from 6 to 8pm, featuring Sworn Enemy Lager: “A rich and malty light lager style. Lots of body provide a nice malt backbone and just enough hops to satisfy the palate. Nothing better than enjoying a nice crisp lager beer after having a fierce battle with a your sworn enemy. Sit back and enjoy a pint. PROST!” It’s only 4.26% abv, an easy-drinking session beer.
Flat Tail Brewing (Corvallis) posted about a new beer yesterday that I got a kick out of (no pun intended): 5 Loco. (Yes it’s like the drink you’re thinking of.) “***CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 175mg CAFFEIENE*** If the big guys can do it, why can’t we? Five Loco starts with a raw wheat cream ale base, into which over 250lbs of boysenberry, black cherry & blackberry are fermented in secondary, along with 25lbs of Meyer lemon, key lime, and tangelo. Oh, did I mention the 1.5lbs of African kola nut? Expect a tart, fruit forward quaffer with a surprising ABV & a nice caffeine buzz.** LIMIT 2 PER CUSTOMER **” Honestly—that sounds pretty awesome.
Oakshire Brewing (Eugene): They have their latest single batch beer hitting the taps: Oakshire Kölsch. ” A deep golden ale with bready, biscuit aromas. Light bodied, refreshing and ends with a crisp finish. Available on draft only in the Willamette Valley. Cheers!” It’s 5.2% and would make a nice springtime alternative if you can’t find a Bock!
McMenamins is celebrating the 27th birthday of their popular Ruby Ale tomorrow, the 21st, all day long at all their locations! “Celebrate this raspberry-ale wonder with pints for $2.50, bottles to go for $4.50, food specials, discounts on Ruby-ware at our online store and more.” I’ll have more on this tomorrow, but be sure to make it down to once of your local McMenamins spots and enjoy a Ruby tomorrow!
