Oregon Beer News, 03/23/2016
Happy Hump Day! Here’s the news in the beer of Oregon for this Wednesday, March 23. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
The Green Dragon (Portland): Tonight’s Green Dragon Brew Crew release is featuring What’s Prohibition Lager, a 6% abv pre-Prohibition style: “Once upon a time, the American Pale Lager was a beer we drank with pride. Mashed with 6-row barley, corn or rice, plus a healthy helping of hops, these were strong flavorful brews. Sadly, Prohibition practically killed the style and what came afterwards were the bland, mass-produced lagers our parents and grandparents were forced to endure. This week, the Green Dragon Brew Crew takes us back to the Good Old Days with their release of What’s Prohibition Lager. The recipe includes the traditional mash of 6-row barley and flaked rice. Then they added Northern Brewer, Hallertau, Mt Hood, and Perle hops to give it the unique flavor of the Pacific Northwest.” It starts at 5pm.
Three Mugs Brewing (Hillsboro): They have a “Beer Randall Day” today from 6 to 8pm which is pretty much what you think it is: “We’ll be running some of our beers through a randall, infusing them with fruit, coffee, hops, and whatever else we can find to put in there that sounds delicious… suggestions?”
Standing Stone Brewing (Ashland): They had tapped a new beer this week that hopheads are going to want to be on the lookout for: Request IPA. “Request IPA is a brand new beer for us here at Standing Stone and brewer Larry Chase has out done himself. This juicy IPA is a tropical hop bomb. It’s smooth mouthfeel and lingering finish makes it thirst quenching yet extremely difficult to put down. Brewed with Sacchra 50 Carmel Malt and dry hopped with Citra hops, this IPA will cause your taste buds to sing in harmony. Medium bodied IPA with lingering bitterness. Amber in color with a slight haze, pours a thick foamy head. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel with aromas of guava, citrus and passionfruit. Strong flavors of citrus, pine and tropical fruits.” It’s 7.2% and dry hopped with Citra, a crowd favorite. Get some before it’s gone.
Cascade Brewing (Portland) has a beer release today for you sour fans: “Releasing 2015 Kriek in bottles and on draft today at Noon at the Barrel House! Kriek is a blend of sour red ales aged in oak wine barrels for up to 17 months with Bing and sour pie cherries. A hot 2015 growing season delivered extraordinarily ripe fruit with immense flavor concentration, making this vintage one of the best in years. Kriek 2015 features complex flavors of cherries, roast malts, oak and spice.”
ColdFire Brewing (Eugene) has new beers out as well: “Introducing the newest #ColdFire beers: Spring IPA – resinous, citrusy, hop-forward; and Red Saison – rye-spiced, malty, with dark fruit flavors.
Red 5 Hotdogs will be here tonight. Cheers!”
Development on Bend’s imminent Immersion Brewing is proceeding and they announced today that they have hired their new head brewer: “We are excited to officially announce our new head brewer, JOSH COSCI! Josh will have the ultimate responsibility for the consistency and quality of IMMERSION BREWING’s beers and 10-barrel brewing system, as well as the development of new beers. With IMMERSION BREWING’s unique design as a BIY pub, Josh’s knowledge and recipe development will extend to the hands-on brew-it-yourself experience! We are happy to have Josh part of the team!”
13 Virtues Brewing (Portland) has a new head brewer themselves: “Say hello to our new head brewer, Cameron Fisher! He comes to us from Colorado, where he worked for Odyssey Beerwerks. He likes hop-forward West Coast-style ales, Belgian beers, and long walks on the beach. If you see him working hard, say hi!”
