Oregon Beer News, 04/03/2015
Happy Friday and TGIF! Here’s the news in Oregon beer for the first weekend in April, to help you plan your weekend accordingly. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please let me know and I can get that updated as well.
This weekend is the 21st annual Spring Beer and Wine Fest taking place in Portland at the Oregon Convention Center—running Friday and Saturday from noon to 10pm both days. It’s not just beer and wine, there are also cheeses, chocolates, other foods and vendors (from what I understand, something of a “state fair” kind of feel)—but there’s plenty of beer to be had, never fear! Check out the site for pricing and head on out.
PFriem Family Brewers (Hood River): Today is the day for the first-ever release of PFriem’s beer in bottles, rolling out at their brewery in Hood River! “pFriem is set to launch 23 bottled beers throughout 2015 including: annual, seasonal, limited and barrel-aged varieties. The Classic Series will be offered in a capped 500ml German-style bottle while the Select Line and Barrel-Aged beers are being packaged in a corked and hooded 375ml bottle. The Barrel-Aged beers will include the long-anticipated Flanders Red and Blonde.” They’ll be following up today’s release with release parties in Portland and Seattle and beyond over the next few weeks as well, so if you can’t make it to Hood River then keep an eye out for their other events.
Portland U-Brew & Pub (Portland) is holding a Single Hop IPA tasting tomorrow (April 4) all day from noon to 8pm: “We brewed six, Galaxy, Cascade, Fuggle, Nelson Sauvin, citra, and Columbus. Six 4oz tasters for $10. This event is a great way to experience what each hop has to offer. All six batches were brewed with the same base grain.”
Deschutes Brewery‘s Portland Pub will be holding their Pinedrops IPA celebration tomorrow as well (yesterday I mistakenly called it out for, er, yesterday), starting at 11am and lasting all day: “Join us ALL DAY Saturday, April 4th from 11AM until 12AM as we enjoy everything PINEDROPS! We will have stellar culinary offerings throughout the day paired with Pinedrops on draft, 6-packs & cases for sale, tasters and an IPA sampler tray available! We’ll also be running rad giveaways, an all-day raffle for sweet prizes, and we will have new Pinedrops swag available for sale! PLUS – meet our brewer Ben Kehs from 12pm – 2pm for a “Brewer Meet & Greet!””
Portland’s White Owl Social Club today is hosting the New School’s Class of 2014 New Portland Breweries Night, from 6 to 10pm with no cover: “The 2014 graduating class of new Portland Breweries present a new collaboration beer in five different versions as well as year-round beers from each brewery. The inaugural batch was brewed at Ex Novo Brewing where Joel Gregory helped spearhead the collaboration. Nearly all the brewers were able to gather for that first beer and the yeast was then cropped from that initial brew and handed down to each brewer for their beers. It’s a great chance to meet the entire new class of Portland breweries at once while trying their stuff out and the unique variations of their collaboration like versions with Meyer Lemon, Jackfruit, Galangal, Tamarind, Coffee and Peppercorns.” This will be a fun night, so if you’re Portland-bound make sure to check this out.
Standing Stone Brewing (Ashland) has a new beer on tap today: “We just tapped Commuter Gold, our newest specialty beer. The light-bodied, refreshingly crisp ale pairs well with fresh veggies, seafood, and sunny afternoons.”
And over in Corvallis, Mazama Brewing has a rare keg of their collaboration beer they brewed with Belgium’s Brouwerij de Plukker on tap today! “Pilgrim IPA is on tap today in the taproom! This is our only keg of this so come and try some while it lasts! Fifth Street Growlers will have a keg next week if you’re interested in a growler fill of it. Bottles will be on sale in the taproom on Thursday.”
Worthy Brewing (Bend) has their Firkin Friday keg going on tap today at 4pm: “A different firkin each week. This week is Lord Vapor California Common Ale, dry hopped with Simcoe. Tapping time is 4pm with $3 firkin pints until it’s gone.”
Pelican Pub & Brewery (Pacific City) has a limited amount of their seasonal Ankle Buster on tap as well: “It’s back on draft this weekend for a very limited time! Ankle-Buster Ale features an herbal hop character, fruity and spicy Belgian yeast aromas over a toasty and caramel-like malt flavor. Best enjoyed with both feet planted on sand.”
