Oregon Beer News, 04/19/2016
Here is the news in Oregon beer for Tuesday, the 19th of April, another beautiful day across the state. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): Tuesdays are their “Community Pints” days at both of their pubs, where $1 of every pint sold all day long will go to benefit a local charitable organization. In Bend this month they are benefiting the American Cancer Society, and in Portland the beneficiary is Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East-Women Build. Go have a pint or three today and help support your community! Update: The Portland Pub is closed today due to unforeseen maintenance repairs! They will donate a portion of tomorrow’s proceeds as well.
Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting Lagunitas Brewing for a “Waldo’s Special Ale Pre-Funk & ‘Steal the Jar’ Giveaway” party today from 4:19 to 7-ish pm: “Join us as we herald in this year’s Waldo Special Ale a day early! Usually released on 4/20 at 4:20, we get to sip Waldo a day and a minute earlier! Even better, when you buy a glass of this delicious brew, you get to take home a Lagunitas mason jar glass — while supplies last, of course.”
Cascade Brewing (Portland): Tonight’s Tap It Tuesday at the Barrel House at 6pm is featuring Phoenix Mountain: “featuring an oolong tea grown in China’s Phoenix Mountains and provided by Portland’s own The Tao of Tea. Spearheaded by cellarman Nick Simmons, this project includes a sour wheat ale aged in oak barrel for 15 months before adding a late infusion of “Royal Phoenix” oolong, which contributes flavors of peaches, nectarines and light floral note – perfect for the warm days of spring.”
10 Barrel Brewing (Bend): A press release is out detailing their new specialty bottled beers series, the first of which I’d mentioned in a news post recently. From the release: “10 Barrel Brewing has upped the ante with the launch of new specialty beer releases through 2016. Beginning with Estonya, a Baltic-inspired whiskey barrel-aged imperial porter, the beers in 10 Barrel’s specialty line will be hand-bottled and released roughly four to five times each year. Rose Bois is next in line and has been brewing since 10 Barrel’s current production facility opened in 2012. This long-awaited release is slated to hit shelves late-spring. Both beers are limited release brews available through select bottle shops in Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado, and Idaho, as well as through 10 Barrel’s pubs in Bend, Boise and Portland. Additional small-batch specialty beers planned for release in 2016 include additional variations of Rose Bois including Cherry and Huckleberry, a rye barrel aged barley wine, a Jamaican Me Pumpkin aged over 2 years, as well as other yet-to-be-announced selections from 10 Barrel’s team of award winning brewers.” That Rose Bois was made “with raspberries and aged in Lange Winery wine barrels” for three and a half years, I can only imagine it’s extremely tart.
The Bier Stein (Eugene) is Tapping Into Community tonight to benefit the Springfield Education Foundation: “The mission of the SEF, a 501(c)3, non-profit organization, is building bright and successful futures for all students through financial support and community involvement. The SEF works in alignment with Springfield Public Schools to strengthen our schools, helping to ensure our children are solid learners with the knowledge and skills to be productive citizens now and in the future. You can support the cause by… you guessed it: drinking beer! We will tap a keg from Plank Town Brewing and donate 100% of the profits to SEF. Tapping Into Community connects Beer, Nonprofits, and You!” It starts at 5pm so make sure to swing by and enjoy a pint or three of the featured beer.
Block 15 Brewery (Corvallis) has their Dine-Out fundraising benefit taking place at their downtown pub all day today, benefiting Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit: “Corvallis Mountain Rescue Unit offers assistance, without charge, for search and rescue in difficult areas and high-angle terrain. Skilled CMRU volunteers with mountaineering experience, trained in the many facets of technical alpine search and rescue, are available around the clock. Help Block 15 support these dedicated and brave people by joining us on Tuesday, April 19th. All you have to do is enjoy our delicious, handcrafted food at our downtown pub, and we will donate 10% of our food sales for the day to their cause!”
The Little Woody is returning to the Rogue Valley this weekend, bringing the wood-aged festival that started in Bend to the Harry & David Field in Medford. “The Little Woody Barrel-Aged Brews and Whiskey Festival will celebrate craft wood-aged beers from across the Northwest during the 2nd Annual Little Woody Festival Friday April 22nd from 5pm-10pm & Saturday April 23rd from 12-10pm. Come enjoy the intimacy of small batch brewing from 20 local and regional brewers; taste the velvety, deep, intense flavors that occur when beer meets wood.” Tickets are available online here.
Ninkasi Brewing (Eugene) is rebranding their flagship beers, in preparation for celebrating their tenth anniversary. (It’s hard to believe it’s only been ten years! It’s a nod to Ninkasi that it feels like they’ve been around for longer, they’re such a fixture.) From the press release: “This month, craft beer drinkers can expect to see new packaging hit the shelf for three Flagship Series brands: Total Domination IPA, Tricerahops Double IPA, and Dawn of the Red, Red IPA. As the brewery heads into its second decade of brewing, it became clear that the time was right to revamp its core products to tell a bigger visual story. Developed by Ninkasi’s in-house design team in collaboration with its Artist in Residence, gig poster artist Neal Williams, the art reflects the brewery’s move to a more art-forward aesthetic capturing the personality of each beer. Ninkasi has slowly evolved the look of its products with more art-forward packaging for year-round brands like Helles Belles Helles Lager and Easy Way IPA.” I will have a longer post featuring the full press release plus imagery of the new branding, stay tuned.
Deluxe Brewing (Albany): They mostly focus on lagers but today they have an ale on tap: “This week we are tapping the Klosch! This refreshingly light golden ale is great for these warm days! The tasting room is open 3-8. Come try a glass while relaxing on the patio!”
Laurelwood Brewing (Portland): Count them among the “charity Tuesday” crowd with the others today: “We are donating 20% of the day’s proceeds to Eastside Portland Lacrosse! Come on over to our NE Portland pub and show your support for our community’s awesome youth lacrosse organization by grabbing some lunch or dinner today”
