Oregon Beer News, 06/10/2013
Welcome to the start of new week! Let’s kick off Monday with a helping of Oregon beer news. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Portland Beer Week is rolling right along with events including a Wild/Sour Barrel-Aged Beer Seminar and Hopworks Pinball Tournament among others. This week is going to continue to be a great week in Portland, so check out the calendar and map out your events accordingly.
And on the southern end of the state, Medford Beer Week is also chugging along, with a nice number of events taking place across Medford and its environs today. I like the variety they have going on as well: a wrestling costume contest, beer dinner, beer release and ladder ball tournament, imperial stout, and more.
Lompoc Brewing (Portland) has of late been brewing a series of IPA inspired by famous Sci-Fi movies, and this week they are partnering with Hollywood Theatre for a “Sci Fi Heavy Hitters” movie pairing event: a double feature of the “Terminator” and “Terminator 2” movies, featuring Lompoc’s Terminator-inspired “Ryes of the Machines IPA.” (Along with their other Sci-Fi IPAs (SciFiPA?) on tap.) There’s a Friday showing at Hollywood Theatre itself, and on Wednesday at the classic arcade Ground Kontrol in Portland they are hosting a “Terminator Night” with beer, trivia, a costume contest, and more. This should be a fun time and if you’ve been curious about Lompoc’s series you should check it out!
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): This Friday the 14th is the bottle release celebration for their Fresh Squeezed IPA at both the Bend and Portland pubs. All day long, 22-ounce bottles of Fresh Squeezed will be available for sale (as well as on tap), and their blurb also mentions “IPA Flight with sensory pairings”—something which could be interesting, if they’re putting up several different IPAs side-by-side in a flight to compare. Fresh Squeezed is their summertime Bond Street Series beer, and if you haven’t had it on tap yet, try it, it’s an amazingly fresh-hop-like beer (without using fresh hops) and is perfect for summer.
Oakshire Brewing (Eugene) has a new limited-release beer coming out in 750ml bottles tomorrow: Frederic C. Noir. “Tomorrow, in our Public House, we’ll have 750ml bottles available for purchase starting at 6p. We brewed this farmhouse ale with Goddess Green Oolong Tea; then laid it to slumber for two years with Brettanomyces Clausenii in Pinot Noir barrels. {reminder, Father’s Day is this weekend!}” That definitely sounds like one of the more interesting beers I’ve come across lately.
Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland): Tomorrow is the BikeBar’s second anniversary, so naturally they will have “$2 organic beers all day and complimentary cake served around 5:45 for everyone joining us in singing Happy Birthday!” Their imperial IPA, Ace of Spades, is also being released tomorrow at 5pm at both the BikeBar and the main HUB brewpub, so it’s going to be a good day for Hopworks all around!
Occidental Brewing (Portland) is also celebrating their second anniversary this week, with a big party and crawfish boil on Saturday (the 15th) all day at their brewery: “We’ll be cooking up 200 lbs of crawfish plus fixins throughout the day. Food is compliments of Occidental, a small token of our gratitude for your continued support. First batch dumped on butcher paper about 1 pm and continued until all crustaceans are eaten. There will also be some swag giveaways throughout the day, accompanied by sunshine and merriment. Bring your friends. See you there!”
