Oregon Beer News, 08/06/2012
It’s Monday and a new month and I’m back to the Oregon beer news posts after two weeks “off” due to the Oregon Brewers Festival and a long vacation weekend. Getting back into the swing of things, I’ll be getting caught up and updating this post periodically throughout the day with news as I find it, so check back often. And if you have news you’d like to share, please contact me and I can get that updated.
This Saturday the 11th, the 4th annual Oakridge Keg & Cask Festival kicks off from 2 to 8pm anchored, of course, by Brewers Union Local 180—and it looks great, featuring local breweries and wineries, food, live music, and more. It’s also a fundraising event that will support the Oakridge area food bank and other local businesses and charities. Pricing and info based on past years: “Admittance to the Oakridge Keg & Cask Festival is free. $15 gains access to the tasting area, a commemorative pint glass or wine glass and 4 taste tickets. Additional tickets are $1 each. Tasters must be 21 to enter the tasting area. The food court will be free of charge and open to all ages (but no dogs allowed). Local musicians will play in front of the Brewers’ Union before a covered seating area.” It’s all taking place in front of Brewers Union and should be a great day!
Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland), meanwhile, has their annual BikeToBeerFest this Saturday: the “World’s Only Bike-In Oktoberfest Party”! From 2 to 10pm, $5 admission (kids under 16 are free and it’s all ages) gets you bikes, bands, and beer—live music all day, 15! HUB beers, food, bike demos, and much more. A great event celebrating Portland’s beer and bicycle culture and not to be missed if you’re in the area this weekend.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): Tomorrow night, Tuesday the 7th, is the next class in the Deschutes Brewery University series, sure to be a popular one: Sour Beers. “Our focus this month is on beers that make you pucker and that tingle your taste buds. Sour beers have really become popular over the past few years and it seems as though beer fanatics are very interested in the making of these brews. Our “bug master” & brewer, David Brendgard, has been working with sour beers here at Deschutes Brewery and will be teaching this class to you. You will learn about the different types of sour beers, the history, yeast strains, brewing techniques, barrel aging process, desired and non-desirable flavor compounds and more…” It runs from 6 to 8pm in the Tap Room of the Bend brewpub, and will include 8-10 sour beers to taste as well as learn about. Tickets are $25 and there are only 8 left, so act fast!
Plews Brewsin Portland is holding their first “Humulus Maximus Festivus” event this Friday and Saturday, the 10th and 11th: “‘A celebration of hops in the most extreme to mild IPAs!’ Glasses will be a brand-new Ninkasi design, 16 ounce pint size, and offered for 5 bucks. Tickets will be a dollar and one ticket for a taste or four for a full pint. A couple things to note, the Aegir IPA is the only keg that will come into Oregon this year. The Stillwater/Mikkeler is the last keg available. We’ll also have Pfriem’s IPA, an IPA from Portland U-Brew, and I’m debuting another IPA- James John from Peninsula Beerworks. Cheers and hope to see you there!” (via Brewpublic)
