Oregon Beer News, 08/14/2012
Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Tuesday the 14th of August. As usual I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I’m happy to get it updated.
Cascade Brewing (Portland): Today’s Tap It Tuesday at 6pm is for their live Figaro: “This NW style sour strong blond ale was barrel aged in fresh Chardonnay barrels for three months, then further aged with dried Adriatic white figs and Spanish lemon peel for an additional six months. Aromas of sweet malts, figs, golden raisins and citrus zest are noticed up front. Hints of white wine grapes, lemon peel and sweet figs roll across the palate, leading to a crisp lemon sharpness in the finish that leaves a lingering sweetness on the tongue. 9.5% ABV, $7.50 glass, $2.50 taster.” And good news if you’re looking for this beer is bottles: “Figaro bottles will go on sale next week. 8/23 at City Beer Store in SF. 8/24 at Cascade & Raccoon Lodge, 5 pm. NO online sales. 2 bottles per person.”
Silver Moon Brewing (Bend): This week’s Growler Power Hour specials (fill your growler for $6 on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 to 6pm) are featuring a new beer along with the old favorite: “LIFE GUARD BLOND ALE – 5.6% abv, 18 ibu’s “save me!”
HOPNOB IPA – 6.0% abv, 60 ibu’s”
Jamie Floyd of Ninkasi Brewing posted some additional Pumpkin IPA details about the collaboration brewing he’s doing with Seattle’s Elysian Brewing (that I first wrote about yesterday): “Sorachi Ace and Motuneska hops and 150 pounds of Willamette Valley grown pumpkins!” It’s the first Pumpkin IPA that they’ve brewed, so it’s fitting that Ninkasi is involved with that one! I’m still hoping that I’ll get a chance to taste this beer if it makes it to Oregon…
Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland) is in the midst of another seasonal beer that seems a bit more timely than pumpkin beers (as much as I love pumpkins!): fresh hops! They write: “Yesterday we brewed our Fresh Hop Give Me Liberty Ale after an amazing [trip] to Goschie Farms for some organic Liberty hops.” According to this picture from Goschie, those are the first batch of Liberty hops for the season!
Golden Valley Brewery (McMinnville) has a new beer release on Thursday (the 16th), 20 Mile Extra Pale Ale. It’s the first of three of a new “Harvest Series” the Brewery is releasing every two weeks; “20 Mile” is brewed with ingredients all sourced within 20 miles of the brewery. From the press release: “There are very few places in the world that can create a beer using all local ingredients. The abundant Willamette Valley and the area surrounding McMinnville, Oregon provides that opportunity. The Hops used in the beer come from Coleman Farms located near Woodburn, OR. The Barley was grown and malted at Christenson Farms just outside McMinnville and the Yeast is a Golden Valley House Ale Strain.” For the release party on Thursday, they’ll tap the keg at 5pm, and will run pints for $2 until the first keg blows—a great deal, and a chance to support brewing local (very local)!
