Oregon Beer News, 10/03/2017
Today is the official last day of Oktoberfest as celebrated in Munich, though of course there are still local celebrations going on throughout the month. And there are plenty of other happenings in Oregon beer as well for this Tuesday, October 3. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted as well.
Tuesdays are big fundraising and charity days, with many breweries offering a portion of beer and food sales proceeds to local charities, so this is a great day to go out for a beer and a meal!
Ninkasi Brewing (Eugene): Their Pints for a Cause fundraiser is benefiting Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) all day today at their tasting room: “Join Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide – ELAW for a pint on Tuesday, October 3 at the Ninkasi Tasting Room. $1 from each pint will benefit ELAW’s work connecting communities and protecting the planet. The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide helps communities speak out for clean air, clean water, and a healthy planet. We are a global alliance of attorneys, scientists, and other advocates collaborating across borders to promote grassroots efforts to build a sustainable, just future.” (From the Facebook event.) Make sure to swing by today to help out with a pint or three.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): Tuesdays are Community Pints days at the Bend and Portland pubs, where they donate $1 of every pint sold to a local non-profit organization. The community partners for October have not been announced yet that I have found, but rest assured your pints will count! Get down to the pubs—you know what to do!
Block 15 Brewing (Corvallis) has their Dine Out fundraiser today at their Deschutes Street Brewery and Tap Room, benefiting Pastoral Counseling Center: “Please join us for a delicious, locally sourced meal at our South Corvallis Tap Room on Tuesday, October 3rd – 10% of food sales will be donated to the Pastoral Counseling Center. To learn more about the organization, please visit their website at: http://www.pastoralcounseling-oregon.org/” The fundraising takes place from 3 to 9pm, perfect for dinner.
Great Notion Brewing (Portland) has their Community Support Night running from 5 to 10pm, benefiting the NAACP this month: “The first Tuesday of every month we donate a percentage of proceeds to a non-profit that we are passionate about. This month we will be donating to the local Portland chapter of the NAACP.”
Cascade Brewing (Portland): Tonight’s Tap It Tuesday at the Barrel House at 6pm is featuring Peach Cobbler: “A blend of sour wheat, blond and porter ales aged in oak barrels for up to 16 months with fresh peaches, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice and apricot noyaux. This limited project offers flavors of peaches, baking spices and toasted almonds with a tart acidity and mildly dry finish. Will we have another Sour Shower?!”
Portland’s Culmination Brewing teamed up with Ruse Brewing to brew a collaboration DIPA, and the crowler release party for it is being held at Culmination this evening from 5 to 9pm: “Brunch and Bliss is an American double IPA that Culmination Brewing Company and Ruse Brewing created together. This beer will be released in a limited amount of 32oz crowler cans (100). This beer contains Mosaic and Topaz hops. Pineapple was added to the bright tank. This beer comes in at 9% A.B.V., has a balanced hop profile and a great fruity pineapple flavor. There will be a limit of 3 crowlers per person. Enjoy!”
Beergarden in Eugene wraps up their 3rd annual Oktoberfest celebration today, featuring Ancestry Brewing this evening for their featured tasting: “Ancestry Brewing will be here from 5-7p. We’re tapping their Oktoberfest, Helles and Best Coast IPA. They will be hosting a stein relay. Trivia with Ty Connor goes from 7-9p.”
Pelican Brewing (Pacific City) is adding a new beer to their year-round lineup: Sea ‘N Red, and Irish-style red ale. From the press release issued today: “The toasty malt character of Pelican’s flavorful new brew balances its extensive catalog of pale beers and hoppy IPA varieties with a focus on malt rather than hops.
Pelican welcomes this unique addition to its year-round lineup—available this week in 6-packs, 22 oz. bottles and on draft. For the lead role in Sea ‘N Red, Pelican Brewers chose Golden Promise malt, a beautiful heritage malt variety known for its silky-smooth mouthfeel, rounded depth of character, and flavors of toasted biscuit and fresh baked bread. The malt is then supported by subtle dry hopping with Santiam hops to accentuate the malt flavor and add a liveliness to the character. Pelican’s take on this uncommon style of beer offers aromas reminiscent of toffee, caramel, and cocoa: think toasty biscuit-like character and a smooth, dry, well-balanced finish. A beautiful dark copper color and a medium-bodied presence are the end result of this delicious new brew.”
2 Towns Ciderhouse (Corvallis) has released their 2016 Cidre Bouché, Keeved French-Style Cider, the third vintage in this series. From the press release: “To keeve the Cidre Bouché, 2 Towns starts with 100 percent traditional cider apple varieties like Kingston Black, Michelin, Reine des Pommes, Dabinett and Muscat de Lense, and then lets the fruit ‘sweat’ and intensify in aroma. To let the apples ‘sweat’ means keeping them at cool temperatures and allowing some of the moisture in the fruit to evaporate through the exterior of the apples. Next, the apples are crushed and left to soak on the skins before the juice is fermented slowly over the course of a year, and aged in French oak casks. When finished, this keeved cider is rich, thick and brimming with overripe bittersweet apple character. Cidre Bouché is available in limited quantities in Oregon, Washington and California, with 310 cases of 375 ml bottles produced.”
