Oregon Beer News, 10/10/2013
Here’s the news in Oregon beer for Thursday, the 10th of October. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
McMenamins Edgefield (Troutdale) has a limited-edition beer tasting today featuring their Widowmaker Barrel-Aged Imperial Porter: “Every Autumn, when the chill winds blow and dark shadows fill the formerly sunswept forests of Summer, the Black Widow spins her ebon web to ensnare the senses and tantalize the palates of countless souls. However, this year, the brewers at Edgefield have managed to capture the fiendish arachnid. We’ve incarcerated a portion of this year’s Black Widow Licorice Imperial Porter in one of Edgefield Distillery’s Hogshead Whiskey Barrels for months and the result is a witches’ brew of flavor – from vanilla and oak to dark chocolate and toffee.” Yum! The tasting starts at 5pm and lasts until the beer is gone.
Mazama Brewing (Corvallis) is releasing a pumpkin ale today at 5pm at their taproom: “We’re releasing our Batch 13 Pumpkin Ale [today] at 5! We’ll have food and drink specials and giveaways all night. And we’ll have a live pumpkin carver at the party showing off his skills! Join us in the taproom for the festivities!” That sounds like a lot of fun—swing by if you’re in the area!
The New School reports that Washington-based brewery Laht Neppur is planning on opening a 30 barrel brewery here in Oregon: “The new production brewery will be located in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, just 8 or so miles across the state border from Walla Walla. The Milton-Freewater brewery is installing a 30bbl brewhouse with both used and new equipment. Founder and Brewer Court Ruppenthal tells me, “the kettle came out of the Moke River Brewery about 7 years ago, and we picked the mash tun up from Grand Teton Brewing last January. They had been using it for 15 years, so it has quite the proven track record. The two 60bbl fermenters are new and were produced by Marks Design over in Vancouver. We have an assortment of dairy tanks, fermenters and conditioners to round everything out. Plus, a new Meheen six head bottler to do our bombers.” The new facility will brew more of the year round beers Peach Hefeweizen, IPA, Scotch Ale, Strawberry Cream Ale, Porter, and Backseat Blonde, and package them as well.” That would make them the second brewery in Milton-Freewater, after Dragon’s Gate.
Dragon’s gate gets an entry (and is worth visiting). Laht Neppur gets a listing…
