Oregon Beer News, 10/14/2015
Happy Hump Day! Here’s the Oregon beer news for Wednesday, October 14. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
McMenamins Crystal Ballroom (Portland) has a special beer tasting tonight at Ringler’s Pub, featuring a mouthful of a name: Make It Through the Night Light Lager. Bit of a story too: “The phrase, “make it through the night,” stands next to “get in the van” as one of the great tour phrases. For every punk rock band, there are one hundred stories of hard living on the road. Some contain enough truth to be legend, some enough to maybe be considered a half-truth. What’s not in dispute is anything that anyone in Portland punker pack P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S. tells you about their time on the road. Whether currently or in Pierced Arrows, Defiance, The Weaklings, or Vegan Killing Machine, there’s nothing left to surprise these guys. Anarchist desert compounds full of ex-Motörhead roadies, weeks without sleep in Eastern Europe, etc. Hence, it’s all about just making it through the night. Lager-a slow fermenting, clean beer-being the beer of choice for punk rockers-who love fast, mean, dirty rock n’ roll-we thought of no better way to pay tribute to Portland’s dive-bar champions.” It runs from 5 to 9pm.
The Platypus Pub (Bend): Tonight they are hosting Elysian Brewing’s Great Pumpkin Roadshow, starting at 5pm and going until closing. Elysian will be bringing eight of their pumpkin beers and for the first time ever, the (in)famous pumpkin firkin—a hollowed-out pumpkin filled with beer that will be tapped like a cask. The pumpkin tapping will be at 7pm, though I don’t know what beer it will be filled with.
PFriem Family Brewers (Hood River): They’ve got a new limited beer out now: “Our limited release of pFriem Brett Brux Pale is now on tap and coming to bottles soon! This beer is filled with flavors of plum, spice and green tomato. It has an effervescent tangy finish with a delicate lingering bitterness. Pair it up with some of your favorite aged cheese or turn up the spice on your favorite dish…this beer will not disappoint! 6.9% 30 IBUs”
The Green Dragon (Portland): Their Green Dragon Brew Crew release tonight is Bring Me Pie (unusual names today!): “We are not the kind of snobs who scoff at beer made with unusual ingredients. Our approach is to be open-minded and stay focused on the most important thing of all, how does it taste? This week’s release from the Green Dragon Brew Crew is one such brew. Bring Me Pie is a porter style beer made with two actual pumpkin pies from the Bakeshop in NE Portland. Here’s how the Brew Crew describes it, “layers of subtle complexity and delicious, savory notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice that become more pronounced as the beer warms.” Do not judge until you’ve tasted it! Join us at the Green Dragon this Wednesday to see if the Brew Crew is mad, genuises, or both.” Starts at 5pm!
