Oregon Beer News, 10/19/2015
Today is the anniversary of the 1987 Black Monday, but instead today let’s look towards black beers and stouts (as in the KBW event below) in today’s beer news. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news as I find it, so check back often. If you have news to share, please let me know and I can get that updated as well.
BridgePort Brewing (Portland) has launched a new year-round beer, Stumptown CandyPeel IPA, a 6.5% abv, 65 IBU citrus-infused ale. From the press release: “Portland, the city that started it all for BridgePort Brewing Company, was once known as Stumptown and is now the inspiration behind this new, bold recipe. Brewed with three types of hops, Styrian Golding, Centennial, and Crystal, this is a hop-forward, full-flavor IPA. Styrian Golding hops, the cornerstone of this brew, are added at the end of boil to capture the candy-orange quality and aroma. This flavor-profile is complemented with a dash of orange peel. Vienna malt is used to add a slightly sweet taste and perfect balance providing your taste buds with a fresh-twist to the traditional IPA.”
Brewpublic‘s Killer Beer Week continues, and tonight from 5 to 10pm, The Big Legrowlski is hosting the Killer Black Velvet Fest—featuring the stout-and-cider blend known as the Black Velvet. “On this special night, there will be offerings for those who don’t drink beer and prefer cider, but the overall experiment is one of tradition with a modern spin. You see, “black velvets” is a blend that was first created in London in the late 19th Century as a way to mourn the death of Prince Albert. Instead of Guinness and champagne or wine here, we celebrate some of the region’s best stouts and craft ciders. Don’t want to blend? That’s fine. Order separately while still channeling your inner Alannah Myles.” There’s a great taplist with some unusual representation of both components so don’t miss out on the blending!
Bailey’s Taproom (Portland) is hosting a tap takeover with New York’s Sixpoint Brewery at The Upper Lip, featuring a draft list of six beers: “SENSI Harvest – The Mad Scientists make a pilgrimage to the hop motherland during harvest time to find the ripest, juiciest cones to put into SENSI. This year, Amarillo and Cascade were calling our name. Brett Safe – Saison aged in red wine barrels from Brooklyn Winery for 4 months, with the addition of Brettanomyces. Oyster Stout – This stout is brewed using oyster shells in the mash to give it a seawater/brine aspect to the flavor. Pound 4 Pound – Esters and aromatic galaxy hops combine for a complex yet easy drinking brew. Oktoberfest – A golden amber lager with a clean, malty, grassy aroma and a good balance between malty, grassy, European grains and spicy noble hops. Crisp – A light easy-drinking Pilsner with clean flavors and touch of citrus hops.”
Ecliptic Brewing (Portland): This Saturday, October 24, Ecliptic is celebrating their second anniversary with an Intergalactic Party all day long “featuring live music, specialty beer releases, and fun!” They will offer complimentary amuse bouche for everyone, brewery tours from noon to 4pm, and special beer releases throughout the day every hour—including their special anniversary beer, Strawberry Moon Sour Ale. Make sure to swing by and congratulate John Harris and his team on two great years!
Block 15 Brewery (Corvallis) has announced the details for their Late Fall Bottle Release—featuring three bottled specialty beers to be available at special brunches taking place, and at the new tap room. From their newsletter: “Each person will be eligible to purchase up to 6 bottles of Figgy Pudding, 3 bottles of Framboise White, and 3 bottles of Imagine. If selected for our brunch, you will be asked to pre-order your bottles, so they can be pre-boxed for you. If selected, you will be asked to make a deposit to confirm your reservation. You will also have the opportunity to select your brunch start time (9:00, 9:15, 9:30, or 9:45), and you will get the choice of buffet brunch at Block 15, or regular brunch service at Les Caves.” The brunch is November 14th, but they will tell you if you were drawn for a brunch seat by October 30th.
StormBreaker Brewing (Portland) has a fun new concept beer coming out on Wednesday the 21st, to commemorate Back to the Future Day… “From the creators of 1.21 Gigahops and Doc’s Delorean Brown, StormBrewing Brewing presents the final saga in their Back to the Beer trilogy: Biff&Griff Dry Hop Belgian Wit. In honor of the day Marty McFly arrives to future, we will be tapping the beer on Wednesday, Oct 21 at 4:29p. Beer Info: The idea behind the name came from our modern (Griff) take on a classic (Biff) belgian wit, which would traditionally be brewed with orange peel. Instead of orange peel we substituted the Mandarina Bavaria Hops during the whirlpool as well as dry hopping with 1 lb per BBL.” It will be tapped at 4:29pm that day.
