Oregon Beer News, 11/08/2012
Here’s the Oregon beer news for Thursday the 8th of November. It’s International Stout Day today, so while you’re reading the news, crack open a stout! As usual I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest updates as I find them, so check back often. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.
Burnside Brewing (Portland) has their special Chili Pepper Beer Flight going on today, from 3 to 11pm, where you can try three special chili beers side-by-side for $6 per flight. “To celebrate the [GABF] victory the brewery is going into it’s archives to pour a special flight of Sweet Heat with 2 other rare pepper beers: Fatali Four/International Incident a special blend made with Upright Brewing and Barrel-Aged International Incident with Mango’s. Both the rare beers Fatali/International Incident blend and the Barrel-Aged Mango International Incident have a sourness from wild yeast combined with heat from peppers and a citrus and fruity quality that plays well off of the other elements. Sour and chili beer lovers will not be disappointed in this one-time only flight that is sure to go quick.” Portlanders: this is definitely not one to miss!
McMenamins Edgefield (Troutdale): Today they have a limited-edition beer tasting featuring “Barrelhead” which sounds amazingly yummy: a whiskey-barrel aged version of their Hammerhead, and this keg pouring (starting at 5pm) is only one of the six in existence. “We took Hammerhead, McMenamins’ classic Northwest pale ale and top-selling beer, and stashed it away in some of the Edgefield Distillery’s Hogshead Whiskey barrels. After careful blending and evaluation, we’ve decided it’s time for this rich, chestnut colored gem to make its transformation known. During its months in barrels, this beer has picked up a little bit of everything one might expect from oak-aging. Barrelhead is a little lighter-bodied than the original, but loaded with new complexities ranging from faint wisps of whiskey flavor to a sweet mellowness from the oak, and even a touch of pleasant tartness. This beauty is truly a one of a kind experience that is a must-taste for seasoned Hammerhead fans.” One this keg is blown, that’s it for the day—but there will be five more kegs of this appearing at some point…
10 Barrel Brewing (Bend): While not news directly related to Oregon, there is an update on 10 Barrel’s snag with their in-development Boise brewpub, from the Idaho Statesman: “Garrett Wales said he is planning to surrender 10 Barrel’s “certificate of approval,” which is a license to bring beer into Idaho from out of state. Here’s why: Idaho law won’t allow any company that holds a certificate of approval to sell alcohol at a bar, brewpub or other retail establishment. Wales said he didn’t learn of that restriction until after signing a lease a year ago to rent a building owned by the Idaho Department of Lands at 830 Bannock St. Since then, he’s been working to find a solution. Under 10 Barrel’s plan, the company will surrender its certificate and acquire a license that allows it to sell beer at the Downtown location.” It’s a workaround to be sure, and something that should take effect in March of next year, paving the way for an April opening.
Belmont Station (Portland): Today from 5 to 8pm they’re hosting a tasting with Washington’s Finnriver Cider: “Finnriver Cidery brings the flavors of the Olympic Peninsula to Portland with their all organic bottle line. Leora will be in our bottle shop pouring free samples of their ciders from 5-8PM. Expect to try the Dry-Hopped, Black Currant, Pear, and Forest Fir (cider infused with Douglas fir tips!). We’ll also pour the Forest Fir on draft in our Biercafé.” Hopped ciders are the new sour!
16 Tons Taphouse (Eugene) is holding their 2nd annual Coffee Ale Fest this weekend, the 10th and 11th from 4 to 10pm each day. “Last year we primarily focused on coffee stouts but this year we are expanding our boundaries to include Coffee infused IPAs, Cascadian Dark Ales, Winter Ales, a Blonde Ale, and even a Weizen Bock. Local coffee beer experts Oakshire Brewing will feature 3 different coffee beers including a special version of their Ill Tempered Gnome holiday offering. We will also be offering freshly pulled shots of Water Avenue Coffee to accompany any brew for just $1 as well as several Single Origin Cold Brewed Coffees to add extra punch and unique flavors to the beers!” It’s a cash-only event but entry is free; tasters will cost $1-3.
