Oregon Beer News, 11/23/2016

Oregon BeerIt’s Thanksgiving Eve—time to brine your turkey if you haven’t started already! Sean Paxton, the Homebrew Chef, has a Beer Brined Turkey recipe to check out if you need help (as well as a whole slew of Thankgiving recipes). This will be the final news post of the week, so I’ll try to round up everything through Black Friday and the holiday weekend. As usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day with the latest news, so check back often for updates. If you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that updated as well.

The Commons Brewery (Portland) has a cellar bottle sale and beer release today from 4 to 10pm, just in time for the holiday: “Looking for a special treat to drink now during the holiday madness? We’re opening up our bottle cellar on Wednesday, November 23rd, starting at 4pm. Some bottles are in very limited quantities, so don’t wait. To mark the occasion we’re also releasing the 2016 version of our Pumpernickel Rye Saison on draft. This is a dark saison with Little T American Baker rye bread added in the mash and finished with cardamom and caraway.” Be sure to check out the bottle list they posted.

Viking Braggot Company (Eugene): They have a dock sale as well going on from 5 to 8pm today: “Happy Holidays! We will have special dock sales on Wednesday from 5-8pm so you can stock up on bottles and growlers for tomorrow! Who needs to cook when you can bring braggot to your party!! (Closed Thursday and back open Friday) SKOL!”

Portland’s The Civic Taproom is celebrating their second anniversary today: “Come celebrate our 2nd year anniversary! It’s the Wednesday before Thanksgiving so no excuses. Excited to celebrate with everyone!” They will be pouring beer from De Garde, PFriem, Ordnance, AleSmith, Mt. Hood, Melvin, Rogue, and more.

Baerlic Brewing (Portland) apparently has not one but two beer releases today: a WoodWorker bottle release, Dinosaur Head, “a Mixed Fermentation Belgian Pale ale aged on pluot fruit (plum & apricot hybrid) in French oak on multiple strains of wild yeast and bacteria for 24 months”; and Eighty-Bob Scottish Ale: “Aromas of toffee, nuts, and dark fruit from rich and chewy English malts balance nicely with a slightly sweet but dry bread crust finish. Recipe by our brewer/eye candy Sean Rubbo. So give him a high-five when you see him!” Both take place from 4 to 10pm.

The Green Dragon (Portland): Their Green Dragon Brew Crew release today at 5pm is featuring German Pilsener: “A blend of premium German Pilsner malts provides the simple foundation for the Brew Crew’s latest interpretation of a Classic Style, German Pilsener. Fresh cereal grain and a touch of graham greets the nose, backed in harmony with the clean spice of whole flower Hallertau Mittelfruh hops. Fresh, clean and refreshing with nothing to hide. Enjoy this fine example while it lasts.”

Three Creeks Brewing (Sisters) will be at the Beer Stop Growler Station in Redmond today for a “Tap Out” event from 5 to 8pm: “Just in time for Thansgiving! Stop in and visit with Three Creeks Brewing. They will be giving away free samples and swag while supplies last. We will have a couple beers on tap so you can fill up your growlers for your holiday dinner. Cheers!”

Coin Toss Brewing (Oregon City): Today from 3 to 8pm they are celebrating “TANKSgiving”: “Join us for a very special day-before-Thanksgiving celebration. We’ll be serving our latest batch of Nine Eyes IPA right out of the fermenter! Its a as fresh as our beer gets. Naturally carbonated with a killer hop aroma. Plus all of your Thanksgiving Growler Fill needs, complimentary snacks, and a few surprises (hint: we have other fresh beers in our fermenters too!).”

McMenamins has their new Crangerine Dream Cider on tap starting today, and today only (Wednesday the 23rd) they are offering a special $15 growler fill for this new cider. “Just in time for Thanksgiving, TODAY only, we have a $15 growler fill special for our new seasonal cider, Crangerine Dream, a cranberry-orange-tangerine hard cider that pairs well with classics such as turkey & dressing. Available at all locations.”

Rogue Ales (Newport): Their annual Thanksgiving garage sale kicks off today and runs through the weekend at the various Rogue locations. “This weekend, get your Rogue lagers, stouts and ales in kegs, bottles and growlers as well as t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, glassware and other Rogue goods while saving some money.” Just in time for holiday shopping.

Santiam Brewing (Salem) has a “Black Friday” beer sale starting today (Wednesday): “Black Friday Special – but we’ll just start today – we’re down to the bottom of the last pallet of Ecotopia – on sale now while they last – pick them up for $38 a case of 12 bottles – when thy’re gone they’re gone – that’s cheaper than grower fill prices.”

Montavilla Brew Works (Portland): They have a pre-Thanksgiving beer release tonight (Wednesday): “Stop by tonight for TWO very special beer releases. The first is “Stefon the Weizen”, a refreshing and crisp hefeweizen by our own Alex Graham. The second is “Midnight in Bruges”, a Belgian Porter that is caramelly, chocolatey and a little spicy! Both beers brewed with help from our friends at Imperial Organic Yeast.”

Royale Brewing (Portland) also has a release tonight: “We’re releasing our winter ale at the Garrison Tap House tonight. Jól is our red ale aged in French oak with seasonal spices blended in. Let Jól be your start to this holiday season.”

Thanksgiving

Many places will be closed on Thanksgiving proper, though there are a few that will be open, including: Wild Ride Brewing (Redmond), Rogue Hall in Portland, Ordnance Brewing (Boardman), Chetco Brewing (Brookings), McMenamins hotel properties (but not standalone pubs).

(Black) Friday

Upright Brewing (Portland): They are hosting their Beer & Wine Varietal Fest from 2 to 9pm on Friday: “Discover the harmonious marriage between beer and wine at the Beer & Wine Grape Varietal Fest presented by Upright Brewing and the creators of the Portland Fruit Beer Fest and Peche Fest this black friday November 25th from 2-9pm. Featuring ten unique, sometimes tart, dry and wine-like beers that are brewed using actual wine grapes or wine grape juice in an attempt to bridge the two worlds. Adding to the complimentary experience, there will be wines served from the Pacific Northwest alongside the beers with special appearances by Patton Valley Vineyards and Statera Cellars among others.” It is cash only and: “Featuring 4oz beer pours for $3 and 12oz glasses for $6 of some very rare and special beers with free wine samples and individually priced glass pours.”

Roscoe’s (Portland): Their Black Friday Holiday Summit starts on Friday and runs through the weekend: “Roscoe’s Black Friday Holiday Summit will be celebrating all of the flavors and beer styles that are favorites during the holidays. The Summit will kick off at noon on Black Friday, November 25h. The beers will be flowing all weekend long! There will be vintage beers, Holiday beers, and Holiday Flavors on tap! Some of the breweries (and beers) represented will include: Crux (Vintage 2013 Freakcake), Pfriem (Vintage Christmas), Delerium (2013 Noel), Hopworks (2013 Kentucky Christmas) , The Bruery, 54 40, and many more.”

The Green Dragon‘s Black Beer Friday features Full Sail Brewing‘s beers among others: “Skip the hysteria and slide up to the bar. We’re pouring a collection of rare barrel-aged, cellared stouts and porters, including a six-year vertical of Full Sail’s Top Sail Imperial Porter and Black Gold Imperial Stout series.”

Bazi Bierbrasserie (Portland) is going Belgian for the 25th anniversary of La Trappe Trappist Quad from 5 to 8pm: “Join Artisanal Imports for the 25th Anniversary of La Trappe Trappist Quad and its official beer release – Quadrupel Oak Aged Batch #25. La Trappe is one of only nine Trappist breweries in the world allowed to carry the logo “Authentic Trappist Product”. and the only Trappist Ale that is made in The Netherlands. A $15 event sampler tray will be available for purchase featuring five – 5 oz pours of La Trappe beers: Puur, Isid’or, Tripel, Quad and Quad Oak Aged Batch #25.”

Portland’s Base Camp Brewing is celebrating Black Friday at Loyal Legion: “If you love or hate Black Friday, Loyal Legion and Base Camp will be here to help you enjoy it or ignore it completely, Special pricing on all Base Camp beers on tap and give aways all day!”

Belmont Station (Portland) has Bourbon County Stout for their Black Friday: “Yes, Virginia, we will have Bourbon County Stout for sale on Black Friday! Bottles of Bourbon County Stout, BCS Regal Rye, BCS Coffee and BCS Barley Wine will be on sale starting at 2 p.m. Limit1 bottle of Bourbon County Stout and each of the variants per person, while supplies last. And, because we are in the holiday spirit, Bourbon County Stout 2016 also will be pouring on tap, as part of our special holiday draft list in the tap room! Check out our live draft list here on the website that day for all the details!”

Arch Rock Brewing (Gold Beach) has a free beer tasting at Homegrown Public House in Florence on Friday at 5pm. Homegrown Public House also noted, “It’s our 4th anniversary! Come in Friday for the beer tasting with Arch Rock, live music with Denny Weaver, drink specials & give-aways!”

McMenamins 23rd Avenue Bottle Shop in Portland has “Pitch Black Friday” taking place all day long: “It’s Black Friday and we’re going dark. All of our taps will be filled with delicious dark beers… so come in for a taste or a pint and take a few Crowlers home! Goose Island’s Bourbon County, Epic’s Big Bad Baptist, Boneyard’s Armored Fist and dark Deschutes specialties might just make an appearance…”

Beerworks (Medford) is also planning a Bourbon County Stout release on Friday: “Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout Release Party is on Black Friday (Nov. 25th). Doors open at 11am. This world famous stout is rated 100 on RateBeer, 100 on BeerAdvocate & 4.6 on Untappd. Quantities are limited so we are allowing 2 bottles per person.”

Weekend

Bottles in Portland is hosting their first-ever DeanFest on Saturday, which is slated as a fundraiser to keep the infamous Portland speakeasy open: “In an effort to keep Dean’s Scene alive, according to his wishes, a group has formed to start organizing events, fundraisers, social media and crowdfunding. The goal is to buy the property and keep Dean’s Scene going. This first event is a rush because we are celebrating the first ever DeanFest, which will be held on his birthday, November 26, 2016. It is a fundraiser to support keeping Dean’s Scene open.” There’s a bit of background on the New School here.

Great Notion Brewing (Portland): Saturday is their latest crowler release: “Crowler release of Crazy Fingers, a 7% abv IPA brewed with Vic Secret hops from Australia and Motueka from New Zealand. Yes, Crazy Fingers is a Grateful Dead song, but it also represents our commitment to experimentation. Crazy Fingers will go on tap most likely Wednesday 11/23 draft only, with 2 crowlers per person available starting Saturday and then 1 crowler per person each day thereafter.”
