Oregon Beer News, 12/05/2017
Today is Repeal Day—the day in 1933 when Utah became the 36th and final state needed to repeal Prohibition in the U.S. As such a momentous day in U.S. beer history, raise a toast to Repeal sometime today! Here’s the news in Oregon beer to enjoy this day as well; as usual, I’ll be periodically updating this post throughout the day, so check back often for the latest news. And if you have news to share, please contact me and I can get that posted too.
Worthy Brewing (Bend): Tonight is their monthly Charity Pint Night, with $1 of every pint sold between 4 and 7pm donated to Ronald McDonald House: “Come down to Worthy on December 5th to support the Ronald McDonald House. $1 of each pint purchased will be donated! For the month of December, we will also be participating in the “Have a Heart Campaign” and selling purple hearts for Ronald McDonald int he Pub. Funds from this campaign support the “Home Away From Home” program which provides aid to families of seriously ill children.” Get down there and help out with a pint or three.
Three Mugs Brewing (Hillsboro) has a holiday beer release today, for Mrs. Claus’s Peppermint Desire: “We’re releasing our special beer we brewed just for the Holiday Ale Festival: Mrs Claus’s Peppermint White Chocolate Ale, 7.5% ABV, 17 IBU: Her spouse off to work, Mrs. Claus settles in for a cold winter’s night with a mug of malty blonde ale, brewed with delectable white chocolate…mmm. But, something is missing. Careful not to wake the elves, she tiptoes over to her stocking – hung by the chimney with care – to get the ingredient that will fulfill her desire and make this the perfect holiday brew: peppermint!”
Portland’s Gigantic Brewing has a big release today at the taproom when they open: “We’re excited to announce the release of 2017 Most MOST Premium Bourbon Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout. This magical elixir spent almost 2 years in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. The beer has a complex aroma and flavor of dark chocolate, coconut, burnt caramel, dark fruit, coffee, vanilla and bourbon. We will be pouring Most MOST Premium on draft and will have 16.9oz bottles to take home. A limited number of cases and draft kegs will be shipped to Gigantic distribution partners.” At 12.3% abv it’s a doozy all right.
Deschutes Brewery (Bend): Tuesdays are Community Pints days at the Deschutes pubs, where $1 of every pint sold will be donated to a given non-profit for the month. I don’t yet know what organizations are the beneficiaries for December, but be sure to get down to either the Bend or Portland pub and enjoy a pint or three to help out.
Montavilla Brew Works (Portland) has a Triple IPA release today when they open: “It’s all about the hops! This triple IPA is not overly bitter and showcases Indie Hops Cascade/Centennial hop flavor combo, balanced with an appropriately dry Northwest finish. Dry hopped with Mosaic hops for a dank herb/mango/pine/sweet berry explosion that dominates the aroma. Severe Concussion is the third offering in Montavilla Brew Works’ “Concussion IPA” series.”
Imperial Bottle Shop in Portland has their winter coat drive for New Avenues for Youth continuing today: “if you donate an article of cold-weather clothing from 5-8PM, in return you will get to choose between receiving either an article of new brewery apparel or a $1 pint from either of that night’s 2 feature breweries.” Today’s featured breweries are Culmination Brewing and Sunriver Brewing.
Cascade Brewing (Portland): Their Tap It Tuesday at the Barrel House at 6pm is featuring Ascorbic Ale: “A blend of two-year-old white wine barrel aged sour triple with tangerine peel. This beer is full bodied with a refreshingly tart note of citrus and a slightly sweet malty finish.”
Belmont Station (Portland) is hosting a (cider) Pommeau Throwdown between 2 Towns Ciderhouse and Finnriver Cider today from 5 to 8pm: “Pommeau originates in northwestern France by mixing apple juice with apple brandy: Calvados in Normandy or lambig in Brittany. Considered a mistelle, it is generally consumed as an apéritif, or as an accompaniment to melon or blue cheese. It is also popular with a variety of desserts, including any chocolate or apple-based dishes. Rare in these parts, we are so fortunate to have two regional cideries making Pommeau, and as a rare treat, both cideries, 2 Towns and Finnriver, will be sampling their respective Pommeaux in the bottle shop, along with a few other ciders from each. Plus, you, the taster, get to vote for your favorite Pommeau after sampling them. (Winning cidery gets braggin’ rights.) Whichever one you like better, we will have bottles of each Pommeau available to take home, too! It promises to be a fun, light-hearted Pommeau Throwdown (or is it a “Threaudown?”)!” Okay, this one sounds pretty fun!
Oregon City Brewing has their Charity Pint Night tonight starting at 5pm, benefiting Banyan: “Come join us at Oregon City Brewing for their Tuesday Charity Pint Night! From 5pm to close $1 out of every pint, growler, crowler, and every other beverage sold will be donated to us to help low-income residents in the Portland area. Please share this event and make sure to bring your friends!”
Portland’s Great Notion Brewing has their own Community Support Night supporting Vernon PTA starting at 5pm: “The first Tuesday of every month we donate a percentage of proceeds to a non-profit that we are passionate about. This month we will be donating to our local school, Vernon’s PTA!”
Widmer Brothers Brewing is hosting their Pints for Portland benefiting the Oregon Food Bank today at 3pm: “Help us kick off the holiday season with our December Pints for Portland non-profit partner, the Oregon Food Bank. On Tuesday, December 5th, the Widmer Brothers Pub will be offering $1 pints of Brrr all day (3-10pm) to anyone who brings in a can of food. All collected cans, plus $1 from each pint of Brrr sold on Tuesday, 12/5 will donated to the Oregon Food Bank to help provide meals for Oregon families in need.”
Block 15 Brewery (Corvallis): Their monthly cellar stash bottle release at the Taproom is going on today: “Stop by Block 15 Brewery & Tap Room [today] for this month’s #CellarStash release—2016 Sweet Sassy Molassy. Our founding brewer Nick has pulled 12 bottles from his reserve, which will be available for in-house consumption at the Tap Room while they last! (Join us on the first Tuesday of every month for a new, limited release of bottles from our cellar.) Sweet Sassy Molassy is a dark strong ale brewed with black strap molasses and matured in Kentucky bourbon barrels, balancing complex grist notes of cured tobacco, caramel and gentle smoke with dark molasses, bourbon, and oak.”
